Description: Azurmendi is a restaurant where emotions multiply. Each corner, detail and service reflects the personality and philosophy of Eneko Atxa. 2017 Elite Traveller best restaurant in the world Azurmendi restaurant is the best example of signature cuisine in Biscay and the only restaurant in the province with 3 Michelin stars. It was built into a hillside surrounded by autochthonous vineyards. Eneko´s home, as he calls the restaurant, was conceived and built with sustainability, the foundation of his philosophy, in mind. Azurmendi is possibly one of the most unique sustainable buildings of modern architecture. It reflects the canons of the Basque identity and integrates photovoltaic solar panels and a geothermic system to produce electricity, harvests rainwater to cover a number of operations among other features. For all these, Azurmendi*** was granted the Sustainable Restaurant Award 2014.

This Michelin starred restaurant is just a short cab ride from Bilbao out in the beautiful Basque countryside. The location is underimpressive but as you see how they built on the site it all makes sense. They make most of their greens there and spices, even their txacoli wine. Not surprised they won the sustainability award recently.

It is also one of the 50 best restaurants in the world. The menu is set and I recommend doing the wine pairing. This experience was fantastic, the menu futuristic but balanced and innovative. This takes between 4 and 5 hours to do but is so worth it. This is a must on every foodlovers bucket-list

Although San Sebastián is a restaurant Mecca our local friends advised me to do 100+ km from the town to Larrabetzu and visit this 3* Michelin restaurant. And it’s really worth visiting - it’s an absolute must-try restaurant with the food from another galaxy where you can clearly understand the difference between a 1* and a 3* Michelin.

I went there with my wifey for a lunch.

This was a fantastic experience which started with a “picnic” in the restaurant’s garden, a range of inventive small bites coupled with Azurmendi’s own wine. Then we followed to the kitchen to see the process of making this fantastic food and taste such things as truffled egg. Then we moved to the “greenhouse” to taste some spices and herb quark.

And then was the lunch itself - we took tasting menu “Erroak” of 10+ dishes including three cosmic desserts. Everything was far beyond our expectation, I could never imagine such combination of flavors and textures. As per sommelier’s suggestion we coupled the menu with 1995 Tondonia - and that was a perfect match!

So we’ll come back here for sure!

It started with a picnic in the patio and continued into the kitchen where we were served truffle infused egg yolks. After that we had some amazing creations in the garden before entering the restaurant where the lobster, pigeon and olive desert were the highlights.

Not much to say except an amazing experience. So many complex tastes and visual presentations of different dishes. This was truly a food-as-art experience. This also includes the service, which was consummate and refined. The whole experience takes at least three hours, so would recommend making this your major activity of the day (followed by a long walk to help digest all that food)!!

One of he best restaurants in Spain right now. From the moment you step inside, the picnic, kitchen, greenhouse and finally the impressive dining room....everything was perfect. All the dishes were spectacular yet delicious.
