We stayed there the first week of August 2016 in a mobil home. We recommend the campsite mainly because of its unique location on an island in the Rhine and the Canal d'Alsace from where many nice trips can be made to Freiburg, Schwarzwald, Vosges and the wine villages in Alsace.

The camp site is in France but you only have to cross the bridge to be in Germany. Very special bearing in mind the difficult relation between these countries in the past. From a civil Technology point of view the sluices and the hydropower station in the canal are interesting. The noise of ships could lead to some disturbance for those sensitive to it.

A bike is strongly recommended: this makes it only 10 minutes to the pittoresque village of Breisach with nice restaurants and terraces. The region of Alsace is nice for biking too.

There was no animation. For us this was no problem because we mainly consider that as noise pollution and the village of Breisach with terraces was close by. Still the campsite feels a bit desolated with some 30-40% of the places untaken even in high season. As noted by others we also felt some sense of indifference from the owners eg the central court and some pitches had weed and rough grass.

Our mobil home had trees around but we noted very little shelter at others. Most mobil homes have a covered veranda (convenient on rainy or very sunny days) but for unknown reasons ours and a few neaighbouring ones didn't have this. The snackbar was sometimes closed and had very little take away food but we just took salads and French Fries from the McDonalds 5 minutes by bike.

There is free entrance to the nice swimming pool next to the campsite which has a nice slide.

Finally: WIFI is expensive, 20 Euro's for a week, only valid on 2 devices but not at the same time.

The management here have managed to produce a woeful campsite from such a stunning location between the Rhine and the Grand Canal d'Alsace. It's noisy with kids roaming uncontrollably, the pitches appear to be from the pre-lawnmower era and the shower facilities... well, I can't be bothered to think of another metaphor but you get the idea.

What has happened to this campsite on the Ile du Rhin? Years ago the family stayed here two years running when the children were small. Then it was a municipal campsite cheap and cheerful, basic facilities, but always full to capacity. I returned this July and was so disappointed, expecting it to be buzzing with families, once past the modern reception, it looked forlorn and dismal. Despite the new beautifully appointed shower/toilet blocks, a shower or a trip to the washing up area was a waste of time, due to the fact that there was no hot water over the four nights we were there. Pitches looked neglected with weeds and rough grass, there were large holes in the fencing around the tennis court area, with weeds growing through the middle of the court, and around the table tennis table. The approach to the restaurant was even worse, as neither the shop nor the restaurant looked like it had been open for at least a couple of seasons, with empty shelves and rubbish strewn about. Moreover, the water supply areas on the pitches were hung with cobwebs, and the pipes from the tap were filthy. No wonder the place was almost deserted, even though it was a hot July week, the visitors being mostly those in static mobile homes. When I decided to revisit this lovely area, where there are so many beautiful places to visit on both sides of the Rhine, The Black Forest, and the quaint wine villages of Alsace to name only two, I learnt that it was now part of the Village Centre group of campsites, and assumed the site would have been updated and well maintained, but I was wrong. Sited as it is between the River Rhine and the Canal d'Alsace it is perfectly placed for trips into Germany as well as visiting the delights of the French countryside, but if it is left to deteriorated any more, I doubt if anyone will want to take advantage by staying here. I will certainly be contacting the company who now owns it, surely they cannot be aware of its state, - unless they are running it down slowly to close it?
