This GORGEOUS house along with its FABULOUS hosts makes for a very very enjoyable stay in Stratford, Ontario.
The timber ramp beckons one down the side of the rectangular house, (during the stay it was fun to hear the rumble of children’s footfall as they too took up the invitation to engage with the welcoming ramp). The folded steel plate entry canopy with single stainless steel wire is tethered to the top of the house’s parapet, activating the confident verticality of the four storey structure.
Once inside the central skylight allows light to tumble down to greet you on the second floor landing. Timber linings defining the stair, (that winds its way around this central light shaft), warms the interior….I won’t go on too much, the delights include: the large SS. kitchen bench, the lovely fireplace and adjacent shutters, splashes of wall colour, (shades of the Fisher House baywindow by Louis Kahn – but hey what a great shadow to be in), secret doors to various rooms / cupboards…and surrounded by Jim and Richard’s private collection of design pieces, cool lights for nightime, etc., etc………..Why not find out for yourself by spending some time in a piece of very, very accommodating Architecture?
And I haven’t mentioned how Richard comes in and just casually whips up a scrummy breakfast for you……how good is that? Coming all the way from New Zealand especially to stay here!
