Having worked within the Ontario Criminal Justice System I have always wanted to tour this museum for a number of years. I finally did it and was not disappointed at all! It is a self guided tour and there are two floors to this building. Numerous displays and examples of prison life for offenders plus staff working within such settings. Paid staff welcomes you and mans the small gift shop. A retired Correctional Officer was on duty to answer questions and we chance to exchange some work experiences. Guest book shows people coming from across Canada and USA to visit this historic museum. Kingston Trolley Tours even has a stop here and this is worth the stop if you are such a tour.

I went to the Penitentiary Museum after taking a tour of the Kingston Penitentiary. I had no idea that this museum existed however several times during the KP Tour this museum was referenced as providing exhibits.

The beautiful building used to be the home of the Prison Marshall, several original architectural features are still intact. The museum is well curated and tells the story of prison life in the perspective of both the correctional officers and prisoners. It does not shy away from the darker side of corrections in history as well as offers inspiring stories of how citizens wanted to prison life more livable by entertaining them with music and sports.

I highly recommend seeing this museum when visiting Kingston this summer. It is free admission, but I would suggest leaving a voluntary donation in the donation bin so that they can keep providing excellent exhibits with interesting stories to tell.

Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
It brings to mind just how brutal life could be behind bars and survival techniques.

For anyone touring the Pen across the street, this compliments it very well. As the former Warden's house, it offers the history of the Pen and the Warden in the "olden days". Admission is by donation. Accessibility is likely to be an issue in order to get to the upper floor. Bathrooms are available on site. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
