We spent a night here recently, then after a ferry cancellation, ended up at the Harbour Towne for one night as well (see my separate review of that).

This is a older property with fairly recent updates. Here are the highlights of our stay.

1. Service was impecable. Even with a lost reservation and a complete sell-out, we were taken care of in a timely fashion. Always greeted at the front entrance with a hello.
2. Location - right in the middle of everything. Lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance, and fast food like 7-11, Timmy's and Starbucks. Lots of shopping nearby as well.
3. Condition is above average - rooms are standard size, lots of pillows on the bed, coffee maker and closet. Room was clean but bathroom layout is quite dated.

The area, although close to everything, is not the best. There are plenty of panhandlers about. They did not interfere with our enjoyment of the downtown, but people should be made aware. Parking is paid but reasonable. If you are expecting this you won't be disappointed.

Thank you BrianArabasky for your review. We are so glad, despite some setbacks that we were able to make your stay with us enjoyable. Our entire team at the Carlton Plaza Hotel have guest experience as their first priority. This is evident in many of the reviews left for us on TripAdvisor and other review channels. The location is quite convenient, being close to Chinatown, City Hall, Government Street, Bastion Square, Chinatown and Market Square just to name a few locations. Navigating the city is effortless by foot once our valet staff have parked your vehicle away. The rooms are well appointed with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We even offer suites which come equipped with a slightly larger living area, pull out sofa and a kitchenette which has an oven, stove top, microwave and refrigerator.

As for the area of town, East of Douglas towards Blaschard, we do understand that some people are a little off put by some of the characters that frequent the area. For the mass majority they are harmless, however our front desk staff are more than happy to offer alternative routes or areas of town that are more welcoming.

Great staff. Exceptional General Manager! Location is a key aspect of this very well-run hotel. Parking at hotels in Victoria can be pricey - here the $7.50 per day valet service is truly a bargain and a convenience. That you can leave your vehicle for the day you check-out is commendable. I simply do not believe there is a better value for money hotel in the city.

Thank you WestcoastJim for your wonderfully flattering review! Our General Manager Mr. Watson does take great pride in the property and it's staff. We do our best to make everyone's stay with us as hassle free as possible which is why we offer our Valet parking service ($7.50 per night in the off season and $15 per night in the high season). Just leave the keys with us and we'll take care of the vehicle while you explore our small city by foot. If you are needing the vehicle just contact us and we will bring it to the front of the hotel within 15 minutes.

We really enjoyed our stay here for New Years Eve. The hotel service is wonderful and helpful. First, the hotel is in a great location off of government street and around the corner from Chinatown. There are lots of shops, restaurants and bars nearby. We could easily walk to everything.

The rooms were clean and a good size. We really enjoyed our stay here and would absolutely stay again and recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a hotel with a great location for a great price.

Thank you ARF6778 for your review of our hotel and your New Years Eve stay. Happy New Year! We do have a great location here, situated in the heart of downtown Victoria. Everything is steps away from our front doors, so even if you have a vehicle, you most likely will not need it unless you plan to travel outside of the downtown area.

The hotel is in a great location for visiting Victoria. It's very easy to walk around, the stores in the area and the Inner Harbour are quite close. The hotel staff are very friendly and efficient. The bed was very comfortable.

Thank you Penny S for your review! We are, in fact, right in the middle of downtown Victoria. This makes sightseeing, shopping and dining effortless. Our staff are second to none and always love making our guests' stay more enjoyable. For a good night's sleep we have equipped all our rooms with SERTA pillow top mattresses.

I came to Victoria from December 23rd to December 29th to spend Christmas with my son and daughter who both live in Victoria, and was looking for a place that the three of us could spend quality time together. I had received a very good price for a room with two double beds and a fold out couch from Trivago, but I decided to call the hotel directly. Chiaki at the Front Desk beat Trivago by about $14/ night. Upon my arrival on the 23rd, it was nice to meet Chiaki and personally thank her for getting me such a good deal.
The suite was about 500 square feet with 2 very comfortable double beds, and a fold out couch that my son found comfortable enough to sleep in. It had a small kitchen with everything that you needed to make meals so we went to the Market on Yates (about 3 blocks away), and got a bunch of groceries so we could eat breakfasts and some lunches in the room.
With this hotel being basically on the corner of Douglas and Johnson you are very centrally located downtown, so there is no problem walking everywhere that you have to go. Restaurants, Shopping, Chinatown, Market Square, Government Street, Wharf Street, churches, etc., all within a few blocks. The Bay Centre is only 2 blocks away.
The only staff that we interacted with were the Front Desk Staff and Room Cleaning Staff, and they were all very helpful and friendly!
On Christmas Day morning because there was not too much open, the hotel put out in the lobby, Coffee, Tea, bottle water, juice drink boxes, small yogurts, apple and raisin danishes, apples, and bananas. What a nice touch that was for breakfast if someone was in a normal room and didn't have food in their room, vs. going across the street to Burger King!
The hotel also has a rack of umbrellas in the lobby, which came in very helpful a couple of times, because we didn't see the sun very much while I was there!
Overall the hotel was great to stay in, and I would definitely stay here again the next time I come to visit my son and daughter. But, there are a few things that I feel I have to mention, and hopefully the hotel will try to rectify these problems in Suite 401:
- The heater in the room is very loud when it kicks in, especially for the person sleeping on the fold out couch, because it is right overtop of you.
- Water temperature in the sink and bath tub is very cold for a long time. The hotel is only 7 stories I believe. It shouldn't take that long for hot water to get to the fourth floor. Water in the sink most times felt like ice water, and if you try showering or bathing in the morning, the water sometimes is only lukewarm.
- Condensation in the rooms- When you take a shower, the mirror is all steamed up, and there is condensation on the toilet, sink, etc. Even the toilet paper roll feels damp. Running the fan doesn't seem to make much difference.
- If you don't keep the bathroom door propped open at night, it is freezing in the bathroom by morning. There must be a way to get some heat into the bathroom. Showering in lukewarm water in a cold bathroom at 5:30 AM the morning I left, was not enjoyable.
All in all, the few negative things couldn't take anything away from all of the positives that this hotel has going for it! Give it a try, and you will be very pleased.

Room Tip: For the little bit extra money, the suites are well worth it.

Thank you CJ1502 for your in depth review! We do appreciate all your comments, constructive and otherwise. Third party travel websites are becoming more and more popular these days, however we will always match a third party's price if a guest chooses to call the hotel directly. This is a great option because then you are speaking with someone who knows the hotel very well and will be able to give you the most accurate information.

The suites are such a great upgrade. For only $20 per night extra you can have a more spacious living area, full kitchen and an extra sleeping space provided with the pullout sofa bed. With the kitchenette, it becomes easy to prepare meals, especially around holidays when some businesses are closed.

The heating and air conditioning units are window mounted units as the building is older and does not have a central system. One of the drawbacks is that the compressors do make some noise in the room. We recommend setting the temperature during the day so they don't have to run as often through out the evening. That being said it is not always possible and we do have complimentary ear plugs available. Our maintenance staff is exceptional and try their very best to stay on top of our aging building. We also have been slowly making modern updates to the hotel to reduce these types of inconveniences.
