“An urban retreat!”

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa MacMello! It really is an urban retreat right in the heart of the city. The apartment is only 1.5 blocks from the Commercial/Broadway station, and there are tons of restaurants and bars within walking distance. We had no idea that staying off Commercial Drive would be such a convenient location! Both Kathleen and her husband are very accommodating and friendly and will give you plenty of advice for things to do.

Reasons for not giving this 5 stars:
WiFi: the signal in the apartment was extremely weak or non-existent. We tried multiple devices and the only place it worked was up on the main front porch of the house, across the yard. We ended up buying a data plan for Canada because we got so frustrated.
Noise and Light: While the apartment is incredibly cute and comfortable, for a troubled sleeper like me, it was extremely noisy and BRIGHT! The place didn't seem to be well-insulated and we could hear everything, from neighbors next door, to people having a casual conversation in the alley, to all of the traffic off Broadway. While there aren't any traditional windows in the apartment, there is a ton of light and no shades! The back wall is glass blocks, and with the sun rising at 5:30am in the summer, the place was aglow with light by 5am. Even my husband who is a sound sleeper had problems. We ended up buying foil and taping it over the blocks by the bed.

This really is a special place and we would stay here again!

Thanks. The wifi is improved but the space is light and bright and not for everyone.

If you are looking for an excellent location close to lots of restaurants, transit and an eclectic neighborhood this place is for you! A great host, a very clean suite 1 clock from Commercial Drive.

“Great Location!”

My husband and I spent a few days in Vancouver (our first visit, and definitely not our last!) Casa MacMello was very welcoming and comfortable- it was a few houses down from Commercial district. So many great places were within walking distance from Casa MacMello to include St Augustine's pub, Italian bakeries and coffee shops, many international restaurants and the Sky Train station and many bus stops. The neighborhood was lovely and the neighbors were very friendly, to include the owner of Casa MacMello. Downtown Vancouver was surprisingly a very short drive. The rental house had many maps and destination handouts to plan a fantastic tour of lovely Vancouver. The house was very clean and the bedding and towels were excellent hotel quality. There was a microwave and mini fridge with generous options of tea and coffee and the bathing room had plenty of toiletries in case you find yourself lacking. The garden was lovelier than any picture provided with cute chickens that only came out for a bit around 930 am. A comfortable porch is available for use as well as a roof top porch with chairs and umbrella. Wifi and cable w/ dvd player were available too. A few days was definitely not enough to fully enjoy this part of Canada.
Don't forget to ask about parking accommodations though.

“Cute cottage, well priced, welcoming host, although not the best location.”

The cottage is located just off of Commercial Drive, in the backyard area of the owner's home. Our check-in/out process was welcoming and easy. The cottage itself was quaint for one or two people. The bedding and towels were high quality and there was a flat screen tv with cable. There was an internet connection, but the signal was sometimes weak. The kitchenette had a microwave and mini fridge, although we wished there would have been an electric kettle and plates. There was a nice book shelf filled with books and information on the local area. We found street parking in the area, although we did have to park down the block from the cottage. There was some noise from the alleyway, which the cottage backs up on. We felt secure enough, but it is not the nicest area of town. Commercial drive has beggers and we noticed a few garbage pickers in the alleyway around our cottage. It is very accessible to public transportation, right near the hub, which is both good and bad. If you're looking for a place in this area, and don't mind a little diversity, I would recommend it as the cottage itself and owner was very welcoming. Next time, I think we will shoot for a place located in the west end though.
