Average retailers, but an improvement on shopping in a city of this size vs Kamloops where we live. I was pleased to see that it was a newer nicer environment!

Woodgrove Centre markets itself as a retail hub and as “the largest shopping centre on Vancouver Island with over 140 stores and services.” I will give them that – this mall does boast an impressive array of stores, including: Ardene, Bath & Body Works, Best Buy, Chapters (yay!), GAP, The Bay, House of Knives (a personal favourite), Old Navy, Purdy’s (yum!), Save-on-Foods, SoftMoc (my partner’s favourite!), SportChek, Sunrise (the successor to HMV) and Wal-Mart. As well, the food court is equally impressive and features such worthies as A&W, DQ, KFC, Taco Time and OPA! Taken as a cumulative whole, I can see and understand how Woodgrove is indeed a retail hub for the Nanaimo area. You can come here and find literally everything you need from clothes, to accessories to decent food options. On top of that, Woodgrove also features some fine entertainment in the form of Avalon Cinema (8 screens), so you can take a break from shopping and watch the latest Hollywood hits on the big screen. What more could one want in a small city mall?

Indeed, it has been said that in order for the modern mall to survive it must find a way to differentiate itself from its competitors while finding a way to keep people coming into the physical shops vs. just visiting Amazon. I think, to a certain extent, Woodgrove has been more successful at this than most other malls on Vancouver Island. Whereas most malls on the Island are fairly generic, Woodgrove has succeeded at making itself a one-stop-shop, having combined shopping, food and entertainment in one coherent and well laid out centre. And while I will be critical and say that the shopping units in the mall are pretty generic, it nevertheless stands out on the basis of the food stores + cinema. That alone merits a visit!

the biggest "mid-island" mall on Vancouver Island, the store are more or less what you might expect in a mall - all chain stores and a quite extensive food court. The Bay is the anchor and there's a Walmart and a Toys R Us

This mall is the biggest in Nanaimo and with having a Walmart attached to it makes it the one stop shopping place,
With numerous shoe shops, a knife store, an abundance of clothing stores and too many more to list and again Walmart at which you can get pretty much anything, there is no need to go elsewhere,
The food court has a great selection and for the next few weeks it also has an indoor skating rink, yes you heard right,
Probably the smallest in existence but fun never the less, it will only be there for a few weeks.
If you haven't bee to this mall yet you need to go, definitely the busiest in Nanaimo

This mall has the best selection of shoe stores. In addition, they also have my favorites: Hudson Bay and Winners. There's a nice, bright food court, hair salons, a brow bar, big Sport Chek, and Walmart. Something for everyone really.
