Description: We’re committed to using fresh, locally sourced seafood - when available we serve fish straight from the very shoreline you’ll be eating on. We offer a wide selection of cakes, biscuits and take away treats. All homemade by Melanie and her team at the Hive Beach Micro Bakery based in Burton Bradstock. We’re happy to accommodate large parties of diners and we’re dog friendly but we don’t take reservations so it’s advisable to arrive a little early for lunch as we do get busy! Please check our website for up to date opening hours because we do open for dinner during the spring and summer season. Whilst we do our best to reduce the risk of cross-contamination in our restaurants, we cannot guarantee that any of our dishes are free from allergens and therefore cannot accept any liability in this respect. We urge customers with any form of allergies to assess their own level of risk and consume dishes at their own risk. Please ask to speak to the chef on duty if you are in need of any assistance in this regard

Several reviews have mentioned overcharging. We were overcharged by £15 which was eventually reimbursed without an apology. The young staff member who dealt with us was polite but was clearly struggling. We noticed other customers complaining about being overcharged too.

Another review mentioned a single till for all sales. This creates a long queue and waiting time for customers. Another till is available in the shop but unstaffed. Speed of service would be significantly improved by the quick & easy solution of permanently staffing two active till-points.

To sum up, this cafe needs much better management and customer service to justify the relatively high cost of the meals it serves. I feel sorry for the young staff who are doing their best to serve with a smile under a broken system and an unsmiling manager.

I’ve noticed that the company doesn’t respond to any reviews, so presumably isn’t very interested in either customer experience or customer feedback - which indicates a complacency and lack of commitment to improving their offer. I hope this culture changes at some point , as it could be a lovely place to eat.

What a wonderful lunch
Excellent setting overlooking a truly blue calm sea !!
This was a treat to celebrate my recuperation from major heart surgery
Been wanting to eat here for a long time & travel down especially from Wiltshire for the day
The positives:--
Ambience would be difficult to beat
Location the same
The fish for both of us was cooked superbly & well presented
The view, to die for

Unfortunately there were a few negatives:--
"Tiny" paper napkins were a big disappointment, when you eat fish you need more than 1 napkin, ones provided were next to useless!
White wine was served warm
Although restaurant was busy, 40 minutes wait for food was a bit excessive with no apology
No staff visited us during our meal to ask if all was OK, would we like another drink etc
You missed a trick here

I hope you did not mind me making these constructive comments as your establishment is excellent & we would certainly like to visit again & will recommend

Location superb

Food was very good although they had sold out of 2/5 items we ordered

Worst part was the service confusion

Know this may be a British issue but People weren’t sure if they had to queue to get a table or to get a table and queue to order or to get a table and they came to you for the order - right answer was queue for table then they came and took your order

There didn’t seem to be a system and people were ‘just walking ‘ there were two orders - thankfully only for drinks and cake - that came out where the customers had got fed up of waiting and walked out. There are several ways of entry to the cafe with no apparent queuing system on some

We waited for about 20 minutes for our order to be taken and that was only after grabbing the attention of the waitress- then 40 minutes for our food

Realise that this is a cafe on a beach but they are trying to make it a up market cafe on the beach and whilst location and food will go a long way - the service has to be up there too

System and more staff and it will be cracked!

Local to the area but don't often get the chance to share a lunch in the week with the wife. But a day off on my birthday found us at the hive beach cafe. It was a sunny lunchtime and the inside seating was pretty rammed . On arrival we had to wait to be seated ,as did a steady stream of punters looking to fill their faces . We didn't need to wait long before we got were approached and hand a few menus on clip boards. We walked past the kitchen which was open plan and noticed the amount of chefs cooking away. And they all looked very professional in their uniforms!
Anyway , the menu wasn't huge for lunch , but they seemed to have everything covered. From light bites right up to a £80 platter which sounded fantastic!!!
But I had the battered haddock and chip which came with the best mushy peas ever and home made tartar sauce . Everything was great. Juicy thick fish with a really light batter that wasn't dripping in grease, and the chips were pretty fantastic. The wife had some whole prawns and got presented with a crabbing bucket for the shells to go into which we both thought was a really good and very practical addition. Locally baked bread was the side dish for her that looked very nice too. Stokes ketchup was floating around some of the tables, but we had Heinz on outs. We quickly swapped that as soon as one was in reach!! Worth the effort if you've nit tried it before!!!
The drinks were all average prices and what you'd expect, with the standard cokes or posher fruit fizzes . But a bit on the steep side like everywhere else on drinks really.
The food was priced very well for the quality and would definitely be back. How good can fish and chips be you ask ? Very very good indeed!! ❤️
We have also visited their sister cafe in west bay which will get a separate review, but also gets a big thumbs up.
