DECEMBER 20,2015-DECEMBER 27,2015. WHAT A PLACE!! We've travelled the Mayan Riviera many times, but not like this!! The BARCELO was outstanding!. From the clean rooms, to the friendly staff, to the BEST FOOD WE'VE EVER HAD AT A RESORT, we loved our stay!! Mosses Guerra started being a waiter when we were there, He made breakfastv and lunch daily a great experience! He was wonderful, as all the other staff were. Victor at the pool bar, our waiters at the Mexican ala carte, are just a few that made our stay even more enjoyable. HATS OFF TO BARCELO, WE'LL CERTAINLY RETURN!

Just spent a week at the Barcelo Colonial. All in all, a beautiful resort. It is very big! Lots to do and see.

1. Food - the buffets were good, with breakfast being the best. Lots of choices. Take advantage of the specialty restaurants on site as they were very enjoyable. You must try Tokyo in the Maya Mall - teppanyaki style. The steakhouse at the Tropical was also very good. So was the Mexican and Italian. Tip -book all of them at the beginning of the week so you can get your choice.

2. Pools - beautiful grounds. Big pools. Could use any pool at the resorts. They were very similar with the colonial/ tropical the biggest. Kids park is right next to the pool at the Colonial and the Palace.

3. There are lots of chairs so finding a spot for four wasn't a problem at all. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to save seats.

4. Beach - gorgeous white sand. Seaweed was cleared away frequently so this wasn't a problem. However, as you have read in other reviews - it is rocky at the entry point so bring water shoes. Once you are about fifteen feet off shore it is Sandy but getting there (and back) really hurt!

5. Check in/out - this was a bit slow and they didn't care about your room location preference -"we don't have any other rooms". Our air conditioner in the room was not working when we arrived. Therefore the room was very musty (had trouble breathing). They came to fix it and they tried to convince me after a half hour that it was fine. I insisted on another room, which after being told they had no other rooms, they found. They were very helpful moving us. The second room was much better.

There is a safe in your room, a patio/balcony with your own private lawn chairs, and a fridge which is restocked daily with bottled water, soda, mineral water and snacks. I left a note asking for more Coca Cola light (Diet Coke) and they happily filled the fridge with these.

Room was very clean upon arrival and the housekeeping did a great job cleaning it during the week.

I would suggest Jalisco building as it is further from the theater which can be quite loud until about 10pm. 6000 is the Jalisco building - (6100-first floor, 6200 - second floor etc). 6140+ closer to the water park and restaurants and tennis courts. Lower numbers closer to the beach and pools. Really not a problem wherever you are. To me, the Colonial has the best location across the resorts for access to restaurants, the best pool, the water activity and the tennis/basketball courts etc.

Late check out was not possible. However they did store the bags safely for the day. They do have locker rooms to get changed by the lobby for use. I would suggest the ones in the lower level of the Maya Mall - big, not busy and the showers are really good.

6. Drinks - can get just about everywhere. They were very friendly and the variety was great. Shout out to the poolside bar tenders who were happily serving drinks from morning till night. Swim up bar was very convenient.

7. Theatre - shows were just ok. We didn't see every day but they were average at best. Little variety for the entire family. Could have rotated between Vegas style (which was the ones we saw), comedian, hypnotist, etc. I felt this was the most disappointing part of the all inclusive.

8. Pirate Water Park - this is on site by the Maya Mall/Colonial. They have a flow rider, five water slides and a big bucket drop. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon but it was not worth the $15 to get in per person. If it was $5 entry, it would be worth it. Beware - they charge per person even if someone does not plan to use the slides or flow rider. If you want to spend time as a family - anti up.

All in all, a really good week, beautiful grounds and fun for the whole family.

Was there for a wedding with over 40 people and had an absolute blast.
Food was good, beaches were Great and the service was excellent.
Wi-fi was not easily accessible unless you paid $45 for the week and got it in your room.
the phones were not good and had ours switched out many times, needing to contact other guests or the front desk.
There is a lot of walking at this resort, so wear good shoes.
The beach equipment was always available but we were there when the Resort was just gearing up for busy season and it was not busy for us.Lots of volleyball on the beach and in the pool.
Jaguars nightclub was good, they would even take your requests for dance songs.
The gym was amazing, never seen another one like it, absolutely awesome.
The Surf simulator was very cool and worth the $60 weekly pass if you have teenagers.
I recommend this resort for planning a wedding, The reception on the beach under the Palm trees was awesome.

Room Tip: Try all the buffets until you find the best one, There was a big difference in the selection when we tried other buffets.

FOOD: 4.5 stars not a huge variety but everything is delicious (I'm very picky and I enjoyed most of it)

STAFF: 5 stars everyone is welcoming and very nice and caters to your personal needs, it's the little things like remembering your name and your orders etc.

BEACH: 3 stars, it was okay this is where my rating goes down one circle the Sand is very nice and the water is clean but there are ROCKS very hard to swim I wish someone would have mentioned that in reviews, didn't swim very much but the pools were lovely

PLACE: 5 stars very clean and very kept, pools surround you everywhere, the 5 hotels are connected and they have a mall and casino, clubs for teenagers and adults, close to excursions too

ROOM: 5 stars, very clean, has extra stuff if you forget and bathrobes and slippers and air conditioning

ATMOSPHERE: 5 stars, very chill and laid back not a lot of people and all people are nice, good vacations for all types of people there are little children, teenagers, singles couples, you will always find someone and have fun
