We just returned from a 4 night stay. We were staying in Playa Del Carmen and had enough after 5 nights. So we arrived a day early to our Tulum accommodation. We were only going to stay 3 nights but so pleased now we stayed longer. When we arrived by Taxi we were escorted into the garden for a welcome drink, we were all overcome by a sense of tranquility and calm it was surreal. This hotel is like out of a movie set. It didn't seem real, my two daughters couldn't get their phones out quick enough to be snapping their next instagram pics. Before booking i was debating between this hotel and La Zebra which is right next door. Yes La Zebra has a few extra amenities, but if your in Tulum your looking for the ambiance that is Alaya Tulum. I walked along the beach with my husband up and back both directions and we were more than happy with our choice. My only concern is the amount of room for 4 people in a room. The beds are only doubles, with limited amount of space. My suggestion would be more hanging space for towels, wet clothes in the shower area/room. A fresh water shower in the beach area would be a benefit as well. Push bike hire was available at $10 per day. We found more activities to do around Tulum than Playa.

Alaya is definitely not a typical or average boutique hotel. With only 20 rooms, you are made to feel very special and are able to know the employees quickly. The food is great, the staff is amazing and the rooms and structure are gorgeous. I’m not into yoga and don’t focus on “eco” but I felt good staying in a place with purpose. The owner and her friends were lovely and on-site. The is a lot of sargassum on the beach which is out of their control... but they worked to clean it out as much as possible. Every hotel along the coast had the same problem. I want to go back every year if possible. Don’t stay here if you expect the “all-inclusive” experience. Stay if you want to chill and see the real town of Tulum.

Oh and the masseuse was amazing!

Beware that there is not much to do in Tulum if you end up there in the rain and during seaweed season, which has been longer than usual the past 3 Year’s. The cenotes get mucky with lots of rain. Alaya was good for the most part. Waiters were great. Osiras was great. Housekeeping accidentally left our room unlocked one day, and failed to come to our room on another, but overall, this place is awesome. Fabulous food and building design!

The garden room was pretty, but lacked a beach view. You could also see/hear the guest participating in yoga first thing in the morning. The beach area was very crowded and lacked seats with shade/umbrellas. Overall a good experience. More of a loud crowd here during our stay.
