“Nice condo”
Reviewed 4 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

The condo itself is very nice. Four great rooms. Slept 7 of us comfortably and there was plenty of common room for all of us. The kitchen was decent, although the dishwasher didn't work very well. The pool on the roof is nice. It's on the small side and shallow. It also has a nice shallow part where you can sit with a book and cool off. Although there were lots of kids so beware of splashing. There are only 4 of the cabana beds and those get taken quickly. The lounge chairs are nice and big but we found them to be kind of uncomfortable - bring a few extra towels to pad your bottom.

The location of the condo is good - easy walk to 5th Av were the main restaurants and shops are and to the beach. Our favorite restaurants we tried were Barro Negro & La Cueva del Chango. There's also a little pizza place right at the corner of 5th and the street you take straight up from the condo - good & cheap eats to bring back to the condo.

One night we hired a personal chef that Sandra recommended, Tona. It was an amazing dinner and actually the highlight meal of the trip! Plenty of leftovers for a lunch the next day too.

One of the things we loved about the condo was the balcony with the views of the ocean and that it was a corner unit so we could open up the doors & windows and get a nice breeze coming through and not have to use the AC as much.

Richard/Ricardo, one of the security guards, was so nice and helpful. We really enjoyed his presence at the building. At the end of the trip we made sure he got all of our leftover food and drinks.

During our stay we had a couple things happen that really made the condo less enjoyable. First, when we arrived, it had been raining a lot and the lights in the condo hallways/stairways were out (arrived at night), power went out for a few minutes from the rain, floors were slick from the rain, they had to shut off the water for a few hours to repair something, and the door to the condo was so warped that it was difficult to open and close the entire week of our stay. Also, a floor to ceiling glass window was somehow cracked in one of the bedrooms before we arrived. We were told it was going to be replaced mid-week but never was. Kind of a fluke accident but still had us worried every day that it would shatter.

Also, it may be the dates that we were there but there's a beach club, called Cannibal Royale, a couple buildings down right on the water and every other night there would be huge parties going on until 3-7am in the morning with music blasting. Those staying in the two bedrooms with the ocean views and floor-to-ceiling windows got barely any sleep on those nights because it was SO loud.

One of the other down-sides of the condo is that it doesn't have a dedicated beach area. All of the beach properties are for hotels only or are beach clubs where you have to pay to get a lounge chair. So when we wanted to go to the beach we had to just find an open part of beach and throw a towel town. Cannibal Royale is not a beach club we would go to. We were told it was a nice place to go to lay out but really it's a party for young people and very crowded, lots of drinking/smoking and very shaded. There is another beach club called Mamitas that's a little farther down that I would try to go to next time (not so crowded, and not such a party crowd).

Also, maybe we had higher expectations than we should but the condo lacked some very basic amenities that we had to go out and buy for ourselves - toilet paper, paper towels, dishwashing detergent, and garbage bags. We would expect that a condo is fully stocked with these items.

We signed up for the mid-week housekeeping service and all they did was a quick clean of the bathrooms - basically don't expect them to do much. A quick sweep of the condo would have been nice or wipe down of kitchen (we were lucky though that Sandra unlocked the laundry closet for us because there was a broom in there that we could do some mid-week sweeping for ourselves since 7 people coming in and out with sandy feet all the time gets dirty quickly).

Also, it will be in the contract but be aware of the electricity cap and the chance you'll have to pay more if you use more than you're allotted. We were scolded a few times for leaving the AC on when we went out (since they had to come into the condo and measure the broken glass).

Some of the people we traveled with wished we'd gone to an all-inclusive resort instead of trying it on our own in the condo. A few of us had been to Mexico before and hadn't had any trouble with a language barrier in some of the bigger towns like Cabo. But PDC is slightly smaller and has a more local feel (part of the draw to PDC vs Cancun) but just be aware that sometimes having a concierge would have been nice since we found it wasn't as easy to find stuff in PDC and get around. Alternatively more advance planning would have helped us out too. For example, we tried to find a place to get a massage. The reviews on Trip Advisor sent us to a very local place but they didn't speak English or take credit card. So we tried some of the hotels nearby and some of them were for guests only.
