The Property - pretty small for a 4-5 star hotel, and can only access half of it if you have kids. I have 10 and 13 year olds and they were bored after 4 days of our stay (we were there for 11 days). No activities for pre-teen, they have a game room smaller than our hotel room with outdated console and games. Not a beach front hotel at all, you have to walk to a boardwalk to access the beach, couldn't swim on the beach because of the seaweed.
The Food - I give five star to the food, we enjoyed the buffet (Naos) and all the restaurants that takes kids (Mole,The Market, Vento,Olio and Bana). The Sunrise grill is great for lunch (I truly enjoyed your ceviche), the waiters Jacqueline Lara and Arturo Pacheco made our stay special, they were friendly and over the top service. The bed by the pool is the best and worth the $29/day if you are just staying by the pool all day. Sunrise grill need to have one of those "self-serve ice-cream machine" so you never run out (almost everyday, you run out of ice cream). Christina, Felicia and the other lady at the Illy Cafe are great, nice to see your smiles after my morning run.

Few Tips:
1) Front desk should advice everyone upon check-in about the demagnetized key when put near any electronics to prevent unnecessary frustrations and long walk back to the lobby.
2) Not a bad idea to have the coffee stand by Naos but make it available all day (for those like us who likes to have a cup of coffee any time of the day)
3) Improve your game room area, learn from Atlantis (Bahamas) where they have the great idea for "game room" great for the whole family (not just electronics but pool and foosball tables, dance floor for Wii games and a mini bar that offer drinks).

Room Tip: The swim-up patio is the best part if you have kids, very convenient.

Sadly the beach and sea were chocked with seaweed. The hotel couldn't keep on top of it. The smell was so bad we didn't spend any time on the beach. The hotel it's self is great. The restaurants are good. Plenty of choices.

Last year for my gandkids spring break, we went to the Paradisus resort in punta cana, dominican republic. It was wonderful. So we decided this year to go to their resort in playa del carmen, mexico. It was also quite nice. The rooms were reasobly sized, clean and nicely appointed. The pools were great and the beach, particularly the sand, was very pleasant. The seaweef, though prvented one from going in the water. Although the staff indicated that was an unusual occurrence, people we went who had gone there for 3 years in a row stated ithe seaweed was there every year they were there. But of course, the kept coming back. The staff was friendly and accommodating. And yes, we had to get up early to put towels out to rezerve chairs at the pool or beach. But that is so at many upscale resorts so it was not a problem. In fact, the beach person put towels out for us after the first day. My negatives are twofold. Nobody indicated to us that it was necessary to make reservations at some of their restaurants 2-3 weeks in advance. So when we arrived, several of the restaurants we would have liked to try were booked. The staff gave us different stories but the bottom line is that we were unable yo eat at those restaurants. But the ones we ate at were OK, not gourmet but adequate, especially for an all-inclusive. Second, they kept trying to entice us to attend one of their purchase Paradisus "something" sessions. We are not interested in such offers snd the first time we said NO should have been enough. It was a little annoying. But other than that, we had a truly enjoyable time there.

This is the second time we stay at Paradisus La Esmeralda. We absolutely love this resort. The staff is amazing. They go above and beyond to meet all your needs. We had family concierge, our butler was Cesar, the experience was catered to us with surprises every day. Cesar was absolutely amazing!!! Please ask for him. You won’t regret it. Such a courteous and attentive person. The members welcome back party was awesome! If you are a club melia member please don’t miss it. We were a party of 8 (6 adults, 2 kids). All the restaurants were great. Very accommodating with our schedule. I love this resort because it cateres to families. My little ones had the best time. The kids club does an amazing job at providing activities during the day and night. There were a few staff members that really stood out during our visit.
Please give our thanks to:
Efrain Gutierrez Perez - Naos restaurant
Emmanuel - pool
Ricardo - Pool side
Joe Salomón - Nao restaurant (excellent service)
Carlos morales - naos restaurant
Placido - olio restaurant
Ivan - tabaco maker

The only inconvenience we had were our room keys would deactivate and we would have to go to the front desk to activate them again. This happened a couple of times. I’m not sure if you can do anything about that.
I cannot wait to go back. Thank you very much!

I just returned from several days at this Melia resort. I was with my brother and two nieces, ages 12 & 14. We found the resort grounds to be lovely, well kept and very family friendly. We stayed on the "family" side; guests can cross over to the "adult only" side for dining, fitness and spa services (although most restaurants and the fitness/spa areas are for ages 18 and up). The staff was very friendly and attentive to all requests - eager to please. The property is kept very well and the beach is fabulous - one of the best I have had at an all inclusive. I would highly recommend this resort, however do be aware that you may get "targeted" to hear a pitch about the Melia Travel Club membership. They will offer you spa services "two for the price of one" or 50% off the retail rate as a thank you for listening to what could end up being a three hour pitch.
