This resort has a simple feel to it compared to most other resorts in the area. A great family destination for simple, yet most precious, pleasures that the region has to offer. My wife likes it for the beautiful beach that is surrounded by lush vegetation and undeveloped beach land. I enjoy it for the top rated driving, a bit of sailing, and fairly descent snorkeling. And our child enjoys the kid's club, the shows, and meeting kids from different regions of the world. We all enjoy the safely of being on the island. This is not a place for heavy and loud drinkers, loud nights, and cheap flashy entertainment or clubs. If that is what you like, Cancun or Playa del Carmen would be better.

Overall a great place to stay off the beaten path of the busy island. We always felt safe. The room was ideal for our needs. The food was ok, we never went hungry, but not a huge variety. Great pool activities with Jesus and Oscar. We always had chair availability at the pool and on the beach. We met a lot of fun people too! Be sure you understand the rules for clothing at the restaurants because we found that they were inconsistent. We only left the resort once for a snorkeling trip. We were also not too bothered by the workers trying to get us to buy a time share. Just tell them you are not interested and keep walking. We went to relax and we did!! We would definitely return to this resort!!!

Thought everything was nice. Food was what you can expect from an all inclusive. Staff was friendly and attentive. Overall good trip. Beware of the airport deals for tourism. Stay away from attempt to give free breakfast and talk about opportunities for your next visit. Its a trap for a timeshare.

Occidental Cozumel March 16 – 23rd.

We stayed at the Occidental Cozumel last week and found our trip amazing. We are not world travelers but found this resort to be one of our favorites so far. We flew on Air Transat, more on that later. Right off the plane we were approached by a Barcelo tour company offering us deals on our excursions. They try and pressure you then and there to book something. We chose not to and went to the resort. At the resort we were approached again by what I refer to as “The Timesale People”, they offered us great deals but I didn’t like the high-pressure tactics and “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”, now saying that I heard others use them and had no issues. After reviewing all our options, we chose to go with Teofilo, the representative from Vacaciones Barcelo. He was great, offered us insight on the best tours, matched the prices of Air Transat and gave us 10% off each of our tours. We did the Three Reefs glass bottom boat snorkeling tour, The Atlantis submarine and on Teafilo’s suggestion the Heritage Village Jeep Tour (a definite highlight for us). All three tours were great, especially David and Oscar from Explora Tours and all the Crew on the El Dorado through Chac-Choc Tours. We really wanted to learn to scuba but it was going to be a little costly and it would take a day out of our vacation to do the class and pool training which we didn’t want to do, my recommendation do your class and pool work at home and ask to do your open water dives there. I heard that the diving is exceptional.

The resort itself was beautiful. Gorgeously landscaped, well laid out and easily navigated. We booked the Royal Club which allowed us access to a large jacuzzi and La Carreta, a Royal Club only restaurant, as well as early bookings to the other a la carte restaurants on the resort. Margarita and Emma at the Royal Club desk were great, they helped us on multiple occasions including tracking down some items I had lost on the resort. We found the food really good, a buffet is a buffet but had good food and good variety daily. We tried all the a la carte restaurants and they were amazing especially Sonora and La Carreta. Try and book Coral at 6:30 and ask for a beach view, that’s the time the sunset for us and it was breathtaking.

The beach was really nice, although I recommend sand or beach shoes, it has some coral pieces that can be sharp on your bare feet and walking into the water can be a little rocky. But once you get in it’s beautiful, we were lucky that we could snorkel right off the beach at the resort. The first time the water was crystal clear, we saw many varieties of fish, including a reef squid and starfish. A couple of other days the water was rougher so the clarity was less than perfect but our last day it cleared again and we spent hours just floating around in the ocean. Bring sunscreen and use it . Although it was busy we could always find a chair by the pool or on the beach and even were able to use the palapas (beach beds) a couple of times.

I can say that the highlight of the trip was the entertainment staff. Jesus (kids club), Oscar and Darwin were amazing, they made every night fun and have a talent of bringing people out of their shells. Both my husband and I participated in the Mars vs Venus and Darwin got me up dancing a couple of times. THANK YOU for making our vacation memorable. We did miss some of the nightly entertainment but caught the Fire Show, the Circus Show, the Rock and Roll band and Mexican Show, all very enjoyable.

A tip, bring American money. We exchanged our money to pesos instead of US and it caused some minor issues as they had to calculate the value from US to Pesos for us. It would be much easier if we had US cash. We also tipped our housekeeping service, bar service, wait staff at every meal and on all tours, so bring lower denomination bills, for tipping if you want.

Now Air Transat, this was our first time using this airline, we found that the seats were extremely small with very little leg room, I was nudged in the back multiple times and probably did it to the person in front of me just because of the space allowed especially if the person in front reclined their seats. We were lucky that the flight wasn’t full so we could spread out a little but if it would have been a full flight it would have been an extremely uncomfortable 4 hours. We were able to online check in from Toronto to Cozumel but not from Cozumel to Toronto. The website was having issues so we called, after asking the hotel staff how much this 1-877 #, we were told a connection fee of $2.35 with no per minute charge, after waiting on hold for 15 minutes we were told that Cozumel doesn’t do online check in through Air Transat. We can only check in at the airport. When we went down to pay we were told it was going to be $75.00 for the phone call. I was not going to pay that, I felt that I had asked all the questions and refused to pay 75 US dollars for a 15 minute phone call, we settled on $10, I don’t know who will have to cover the difference but just be careful to get all the information prior to making any calls.

All in all this was an amazing trip. We would not hesitate to go back again, to Cozumel or use Barcelo resorts but maybe pick a different airline.

We recently got back from our first family trip to Mexico. We have traveled all around the United States, but decided to venture out after another family had recommended this resort. It did not disappoint. The service was EXCELLENT the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating! The resort was clean, very well maintained, and not crowded. We met people from all around the world here and there were a wide variety of ages. Their activity directors, Oscar and Darwin, had a long list of things you could do each day if you choose and were SUPER fun. We particularly loved water polo, water volleyball, beach volleyball and pool basketball. We enjoyed the large chess set and table tennis by the pool too. On our last day, they changed up the activities to add water polo back in because we requested it. We took advantage of the beautiful snorkeling right in front of the resort, the free kayaking and small catamaran you could take out, and free scuba lesson in the pool. My son went deep sea fishing one day (was picked up right on the dock at our resort so it was SUPER convenient) and Hector and the chef at the seafood restaurant on the beach made the fish they caught for them right on site in three different ways, all were excellent! Jesus was the kids activity director and although my son was too old for the kids club, he still talked with him to make sure he was having a good time. We hope to return here again because of how much there was to do and how kind the staff were!
