All good until the check out

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Apr 2024
I was last here 30 years ago. Not much changed. Food, staff, ambiance, all good - very good. Rooms are basic, just like they were 30 years ago. Three English speaking TV channels. Would like to stay in touch with the world while there. Poor TV.

When I went to checkout at 11am, Victor the front desk manager cut off
my wrist band. I said, can I get a drink "to go", he said sure. My companion still had her wrist strap. Walking back to the bar to get a drink, I was confronted by security, who knew me after a week, treated me like I was robbing the place. (no wrist band)
I explained I was given permission, English is not spoken at most of the hotel, to get a "go drink" and was then bodily hustled out the front door. Of course Victor was not at the check out desk when I was hustled out the door to explain. Very unpleasant and hostile end a wonderful stay to feel like a criminal. Yea, a 70 year old criminal.
I may return in 30 years if I live so long. Unlikely.
Some thoughtfulness by security would go a long way !!

Room Tip: Convenient to walk to town. Beach is a little worn out. Chef Jose is great !!!! Always good...

This review is going to be a mixed bag. A few positives and a few more negatives.

First off this resort caters to Mexican locals and really doesn’t care about making their English/French speaking patrons feel welcome. Capacity was 95% Mexican 5% Canadian. English is not spoken during poolside games for the kids or during night entertainment. Our kids couldn’t participate in anything as they couldn’t understand any of the instructions. The front desk service was atrocious. Absolutely no effort to communicate.

The only decent service was from the bartenders who are excellent and do their best. They were also really good with kids. Special mention to Fidel who was awesome. David very good as well.

The rooms are the smallest I’ve ever encountered in over 30 resorts visited. They are old and in need of a makeover. There are absolutely no amenities. No fridge, no digital safe, no drinks, snacks, no wash cloths, or plug ins. We got 3 towels daily even though there was 4 of us.

Pools were a huge disappointment. The kids could only go in the massively overcrowded main pool. While the tiny adults only pool was nothing great, but quieter. Kids also couldn’t go in the hot tub. To be honest this resort is far to small to have an adults only section. There was nowhere for our kids to go, except the pool where they couldn’t understand the constant screaming of the Spanish speaking pool crew. Both pools were dirty and sickly warm. Distorted Spanish cover band music is cranked all day! (Seriously play better music. It’s not 1975 anymore. )

The beach is awesome! You can walk for miles in either direction. Beach chairs are an issue. They have a total of 34 that they put out daily starting at 8:00am. You can’t take one at 8:00 though. You have to wait for 9:00 to take chairs or the crazy lady on patrol will take your things to the front desk even if you are actually there. This was very bazaar.

The food was ok. There was always enough of something to eat in the tiny buffet. The a la carte restaurant could only be booked at 11:00am daily. Mexican and Italian. Nothing great with crappy service both nights.

Overall this is a great budget hotel for Mexican Nationals, but I would strongly caution English speaking families with kids. There was just too much favouritism towards the locals for us to fully enjoy our stay even though the weather was flawless each day.

Room tip: Don’t try to save chairs early. You will lose your stuff. Instead Go out at 8:45am to get a good spot at the pool or beach.

Had an amazing experience. Clean, food was good, and great location. The staff was always very friendly and approachable, and there was always activities to be had throughout the day. In particular, Saul led some great beach volleyball and was always very fun to be around. Overall, I would return again in the future.

The resort is small, but very clean and friendly . Great location. Terrible wifi. The buffet food was good, I really liked the fresh made omelettes in the morning.
Drinks and pool were great!
The rooms are very basic and a bit loud. We could hear a night club nearby until 4am a couple of nights. But that’s not the resorts fault. Overall a nice stay.

This small quaint resort was a gem in disguise, it was dated but it was very clean and the staff were amazing.
David at the lobby bar was the best bartender by far that we have ever experienced. He always made amazing drinks.
Carlos from the buffet was such a nice young man, he was always attentive and had a brilliant smile.
There were so many more I can’t name them all.
We will definitely come back so we can go to David’s bar and have some of his fantastic drinks!

David is the best bartender at the resort. Friendly and makes the days enjoyable with any drink you want. 😎
The food is very average, the resort is tired and many senior staff could use a course in remedial customer relations especially how to be nice to gringos.
