Description: Just a short stroll, bicycle ride, punt or car trip away from the bustle of Cambridge lies the Orchard Tea Garden in Grantchester; a corner of England where time stands still as the outside world rushes by. The Orchard, first planted in 1868, became a tea garden purely by chance. In 1897 a group of Cambridge students asked Mrs Stevenson, who lived in Orchard House and usually served tea and cakes from one of her front rooms or the garden, if she would serve them beneath the blossoming fruit trees of the Orchard. They were unaware that, on that spring morning, they had started a great Cambridge tradition and little has changed since then. It is still a rite of passage for every new undergraduate at Cambridge University to walk or cycle along the Grantchester Grind, or punt upstream to exchange the formal surroundings of the Backs, for the peace and tranquillity of the meandering River Cam and to enjoy home made scones

I love the Orchard but please can the management sort out the service? Queues
out the door with only one person on the two tills yet lots of staff milling around.
Trays stacked up, no one clearing or seemingly washing up. Would also appreciate more information re dietary requirements, lovely girl was helpful but only because she knew about coeliac disease. Still a delightful place to be if you’ve got the time to wait for service.

Thank Jane M

Jogging or bicycling into the yard and sharing in the great English tradition of
cream tea, we spent the summer solstice there and enjoyed the longest leisure afternoon!

Was in Cambridge on a delightfully sunny Sunday morning, so stretched the legs by strolling to Grantchester via the Meadows. Beautiful. The Orchard had been recommended and its setting is beautiful, too. A wonderfully relaxed garden environment. Very welcoming to families, including dogs. Arrived early enough (another recommendation) to grab a small table in the garden there was next to no queue in the kiosk. Excellent array of scones and tempting cakes on offer but it was my request for a coffee (a latte) that caused alarm. I had naively assumed there would be an espresso machine but here it was a case of putting the cup under a spout and pushing a couple of buttons. Certainly no need for the talents of a barista here. And the product was as I expected, bland to the point of being undrinkable. Next time - if there is ever to be one - I will order tea.

Had a lovely afternoon tea in the Orchard in early summer. The scones were lovely and the drinks refreshing after a long walk. We sat in the deck chairs in the orchard it was perfect.

Have chosen to have lunch or afternoon tea here on four occasions now. It’s somewhere you can feel comfortable and enjoy a good choice of food to enjoy in the orchard.
It’s not the cheapest place but the food is good and the scones are worthy of praise.
Sitting in the orchard in the deckchairs is a perfect way to spend a pleasant afternoon.
Be prepared to queue for your food order to be taken but it does arrive quite quickly. You need change for the car park but they do reimburse you when you pay for your food.
