We rented Sandy Palms for a week in June. It was wonderful in every way. We had the entire upper floor of the rental, 4 Bedrooms and 4 Baths. Sandy Palms is well located on the island, pretty much in between the airport and Georgetown. I liked that the house did not sit directly on the main highway, like many others we saw, but was set back a good distance from the road, down a shaded driveway.
The house itself is very spacious, with large bedrooms, good sized bathrooms and a huge living/dining kitchen area. We had 3 generations staying there, including our kids and my parents. This place was perfect for us and could have easily accommodated another couple or 2 more children. The view from the back deck was wonderful and as soon as you come off the deck, you are just a few steps from a stunning beach. Hooper's Bay was great for kids - calm water and a nice sandy beach. We made use of the kayaks and paddle board provided with the house on a daily basis and also enjoyed walking or kayaking down the beach a little ways to see the sea turtles. We spent hours on the beach and saw less than 10 people our whole stay. Peter, the owner was so nice and very helpful both before and during our stay, answering questions and providing restaurant suggestions and directions around the island. I found him to be very prompt and responsive to any question or need we had. We also rented his van, which we put to use touring around Exuma. Overall we found the house well stocked, whether it was kitchen gadgets, beach towels, or sand toys. We were so glad to have a washer and dryer, as we washed a load of beach towels every day.
We originally considered Grand Isle and I am so glad we went with the house. It was more affordable and very private. If you are coming to Exuma, definitely look at a house over a hotel and definitely get a car to explore the island. We spent a couple days checking out Tropic of Cancer beach and CoCo plum beach, as well as rented a boat from Minn's and went on a boat tour to see the pigs and Thunderball grotto. I hope to come back to Exuma again in the next year or so and would rent this house again with no hesitation.

Just came back from a wonderful week in Exuma, and wanted to thank Peter, the owner, for our stay at Sandy Palms! We stayed at Sandy Palms at end of July, we were 5 adults. The house was big enough for everyone, it's nice and clean, we were very happy with our choice. Everything we needed was there, and if we needed something extra, Peter was just a step away. You can't ajust the temperature of the a/c yourself, beacause it is locked up. If you want to have it less or more cold, you have to ask Peter to come. I would say it's the only small issue we had. But Peter came the next morning to adjust it, so the problem was solved quiclky.
The best part of the house, is the beach, and the view of it from the back balcony, it was magical. Hoopers Bay was one of the nicest beach in Exuma, and we had the privilege of having the entire beach for almost ourselves. If you want to have a nice relaxing vacation with family or friends, Sandy Palms is the place to stay. Another plus, is the location. It's close to the airport, George town, and less than a ten minute walk to a small grocery store, liquor store and a butcher.
You can use a minivan that Peter leaves in front of the house, and you decide the days you want to rent it or not, this was convenient for us.
We did a road trip down to little exuma, and saw nice beaches along the way. It's worth it to see the tropic of cancer beach. And stop by Santana's, a beach bar where Johnny Depp went during the shooting of Pirates of the Caribbean.
We also went fishing and swimming with the pigs during a day trip. It's probably the only place in the world you can swim with pigs on a nice sandy beach, it's not to be mist while in Exuma.
You can also try to take a taxi boat, and go on Stocking Island, there is a good beach bar also there.
Whatever you want to do, you just have to ask Peter, and he will be more than happy to help you out.
We really enjoyed the Exumas, and will probably go back next winter. It's a very easy direct flight from Toronto, and takes less than three hours. Exuma is a small island, laid-back, with friendly locals. It's a quiet place, great to relax. Don't expect the hustle of Nassau, there is not much nightlife and action. But we didn't want that anyways!
We just spent an amazing week on Exuma and loved our stay at Betty's & Peter's Sandy Palms location on stunning Hooper's Bay. Our studio unit at Sandy Palms was perfect for us. From the very first email contact with the Oxley's, we received great assistance and lodging information, and booking our stay was so easy. This was our first visit to Exuma and dealing with Betty and Peter was such a help. They pre arranged our airport pick up and our rental car delivery to Sandy Palms, and their representative was there to greet and welcome us. Our room was stocked with all kinds of helpful visitor information and suggestions and Sandy Palms location on beautiful Hooper's Bay was fantastic. We were settled in quickly and effortlessly. Sandy Palms is just a short drive from the shops, restaurants and activities of Georgetown, where you also catch Elvis's water taxi to Stocking Island. If you need more room than a studio, Sandy Palms also has larger accommodations to meet your needs. There are kayaks for your use and lots of nice beach loungers, and a nice outdoor shower available for guests to use after spending time at the beach. Hooper's Bay beach is a gorgeous crescent of white sand, and the water is just incredible.
Exuma and Stocking Island are wonderful places to visit, and the Bahamian Islanders were such a joy to meet and get to know. We loved the pace of island life on Exuma and the reminder signs at the Fish Fry that read "Not Fast Food, Good Food Made to Order". We can't Thank Betty and Peter enough for all their assistance in making our first trip to Exuma such a fantastic time. We highly recommend staying at one of the Oxley's great properties on Exuma. We know we will be back and we know we will book our future stays with Betty and Peter.
