Reviewed 14 July 2021

We recently went back to St Thomas for the 4th of July weekend. It was our first return to the island in 10 years. My wife and I brought our children ages 6 and 8. For starters, here is some preliminary information:

This resort is kid friendly and very I might add. Our children had a blast. There is a slide at the pool and it worked like an amazing babysitter. We met so many other families. There was a good mix. We met several couples there having an enjoyable time as well.

This resort is not the old Frenchman's Reef or the old Marriott that's on the cliffside. Hurricanes Irma and Maria battered the island. It destroyed the Marriott. Frenchman's Cove is now a separate entity from the original. The original was sold and is currently being rebuilt under new management. So if you remember the 6 restaurants and 4 pools of the old massive site, that is not this. This has one restaurant and one pool. But it's a very fun place and has some great views, watersports and good food.

Food: The one restaurant on site (Sunset Cove) had great food. I know I read lots of comments where service and food was sub par, we did not feel that way. We ate twice for dinner. It was very good. One drawback for us, they don't have certain menu items due to supply (lobster and tuna bowl) but that's likely to change. Facemasks are a must inside (even under the outdoor overhang) and facemasks are required inside the lobby and fitness center (except while working out). That is likely to change. This island is strict. Masks are required in all restaurants except while seated and eating.

Rooms: Frenchman's rooms are all the same and are fantastic. Big, spacious and all have full kitchens. Views are very nice. Two queens and the king private master. However choose wisely. We booked the Tortola building closest to the pool. Remember there is only one pool. That meant one elevator ride. If you are in another building higher up, the walk is longer and the elevator ride increases as well. The highest buildings nearest and connected to the lobby are three elevator rides I'm told. Not the worst thing but worth noting. You have to ask for a lower building when you make a reservation and then two weeks before arrival. That's what is recommended and they honored it. This is not guaranteed though and it doesn't mean you will get a lower room. Keep that in mind. Also remember, all rooms are the same and the views higher are better so there is a silver lining.

Eating: We shopped at Moe's Fresh Market and found it to be better and higher end than Pueblos. Prices aren't that bad for food or wine either. We made breakfast and lunch and had snacks in our room and then ate out for dinner. This worked out great for us. We went to XO and Mims Seaside Bistro. XO had a great vibe and great drinks. Food was good but not amazing. Mims Seaside Bistro was good and the lobster special was great but our service was horrible! So it was hard to look at this favorably. Bad night for our server I guess considering there was a table of 13 seated behind us and they were served before us. You just can't have that happen. It wasn't a staffing issue either which I'm forgiving of but this was tough to overcome. Not sure we'll go back. The lobster was good so take your chances. Everyone says Blue 11 is amazing. It's expensive and a multi course meal but I heard not one person say anything but amazing things. We opted out cause we had our children and felt like a 5-7 course meal was better for just my wife and I. Next trip for sure. Prime at Paradise Point and Oceana were highly recommended. Both a must for our next trip.

Activities: We took the Turtle Cove Catamaran Snorkel Cruise. It was awesome. They took us to an isolated area near a protected island. The trip departs once a day (at least when we went they only had one per day) and is not at full capacity due to Covid. Really enjoyed this. We booked this before we got there. Called the hotel and they transferred us to the watersports hut. Easy, safe and reliable and departs from the dock at Frenchman's. Snorkeling around the hotel is also good. The night Kayak tours looked fun but we never did it. The lilly pads out in the water are fun for the kiddos and adults. We went to Meagan's Bay on this trip. My wife and I went here 10 years ago. We returned with our children. It was awful. Sad to see the change. Trash was overflowing over garbage cans, the bar area had several drunk people all over the place, the beach bar literally shuts down at 4pm and kicks people out, and taxis after that are hard to come by. Very disappointed and we won't go back to this beach. Clearly this place has been overmarketed with tourists and the island leaders should take note and clean up this beach. The water and view is nice but you can't get around the trash and other deterrents. We never made it to Sapphire Beach but loved this beach most during our last trip ten years ago. We took the ferry to St John (out of redhook) and went to Trunk Bay. Our second time. This place is unreal. St John is mostly protected land so the beaches are so natural and clean. This was our second time to Trunk. It's amazing. The water, snorkeling and sand! You can't beat it! Go there. Also heard Cinnamon Bay is really nice and Maho Bay is great for turtles.

Taxis: Well lets save the worst for last. To get around this island you take a taxi or you rent a car. Car rentals are out of this world in terms of cost, supply is an issue and then you have to drive on the opposite site of the road. We chose to just get taxis and we brought lots of cash and lower bills to cover the cost. Taxis are 8 dollars per person and that means children are 8 dollars as well. That's the cheapest if your just headed to downtown (Charlotte Amalie) but if your plan takes you further on the island you could pay upwards of 10 or 12 per person. We never paid more than 10 dollars per person. Factor this into your trips. A roundtrip for a family of four to a beach could be 80 bucks. There is really no way of getting around this. We spent several hundred just on taxis. I ended up just going alone to the market for a quick run. It definitely changes your mind when you factor in coming back to the hotel as opposed to just staying out.

Finale': You will love this island. St Thomas is a special place and it remains an amazing place in our memories. The drinks at the hotel and at the restaurants are not as pricey as we thought. And the addition of shopping at the market made it less costly. Covid restrictions are tight. You need to make sure you get all your tests and enter them in the USVI travel portal up to five days before you leave. Also arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure if you are checking bags. We didn't check bags so we got there about an hour and half before and had time
to eat. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip. I read most of the trip advisor posts dating back to January and in my opinion they were 80 percent accurate so use those as well to help guide you and have a great time. I'll end by saying we would go back to Frenchman's Cove and this island tomorrow if we could and we will certainly plan another trip in the coming years.

Room tip: Rooms in the lowest buildings mean a shorter walk and only one elevator ride as opposed to two or three elevator rides.

Perfect location on the island. Rooms were clean, execellent layout and gorgeous views! Pool and beach were fabulous. If you plan to spend the day at the pool get there early to get a chair. Only disappointment was only the pool restaurant was open. Menu was limited and food was just ok. Would definitely return to this resort.

My family stayed in a 2-bedroom suite for 4 nights in June 2021. We arrived and the check-in process was a little slow, but we got into our room in a reasonable amount of time. We stayed in the Virgin Gorda building, which had easy access to the pool and the beach (just two elevator rides right across from each other -- easy!). We were on the 2nd floor (I'd recommend a higher floor, though) so the view wasn't as unobstructed as I would have preferred, but in the end, it didn't matter. It was still gorgeous! The suite was clean and well stocked if you intend to cook (which we didn't). The beds were very comfortable and bathrooms plenty spacious. There were two balconies, which was very nice as our teen daughters had their own if they wanted to hang out.

Even though the property was sold out, it never felt that crowded -- You could always get beach chairs (although the pool chairs sometimes were full) and there was always a table available at the restaurant. Pool towels are provided at the pool, but you have to bring towels from your room for the beach chairs. The beach was a nice, soft sand and the water was beautiful. There are large lily pads out in the water for you to swim to and lay on (nice touch). If you want to snorkel, bring your own equipment as they do not rent it onsite due to COVID.

We had groceries delivered from Moe's which were there waiting for us with the bellman when we checked in! They even called me to ask about substitutions for items that weren't available. We didn't rent a car, so it was worth the extra money to be able to shop online and have it waiting for us when we arrived. The groceries were brought up to our room with our luggage upon our arrival. If you aren't renting a car, consider this option!

The ferry service from the Marriott to Charlotte Amalie is a wonderful amenity, particularly if you don't rent a car. It drops you off and picks you up right in front of the shopping area and appeared to run pretty much on schedule.

If you want to take a snorkeling/sailing trip, don't miss the VI Cat which has different sailing trips that leave from the dock at the Marriott. It's a wonderful boat and the crew was awesome.

Room tip: Virgin Gorda or St. John buildings on a high floor

Family of 5 stayed in the St John building for a week. We stay loyal to Marriott so this was really our only option coming to St Thomas. Check in took way too long , about 45 minutes. After 20 min checking in the vacation club lady then takes up 20+ minutes. Check out from the room was a breeze. Size of 2 bedroom 2 bath was great and nice having 2 balconies! Great kitchen amenities. Nice having oven, stove, microwave, full size coffee maker and blender for frozen drinks! Our toaster did not work. One of our shower heads only drizzled water and someone came to fix it within minutes of us calling. You take your own garbage to the garbage drop, no biggie. Towel exchange outside your room door, worked for us. Being in St John we did have to take 3 elevators to get to pool, beach and restaurant but it never took us more than 5 minutes.

Pool was decent size, kids liked water slide and pool time activities but we weren’t at the pool much. It was kind of dirty. Beach is small. Only one small area to enter water near the boat docks due to rocks and sea urchins along the whole beach. 3 floating rafts in the water to lounge and play on. We didn’t really spend any time at the hotel beach due to this. We had a car. I would not have been happy if we didn’t have the car to go to other beaches. Parking at hotel was no problem, it is just everywhere else you need to worry about.

Restaurant is your basic poolside restaurant but pretty decent food. You can sit and order or order at the bar to go and stop back to pick up 20-30 min later. I ordered food 3 times. Good chicken nachos! One time we sat and ordered, decent burger and chicken Caesar, good fish tacos. We found out when we got our meals they didn’t have any pasta, which my daughter ordered. The waitress discounted our bill and didn’t charge us for her replacement meal - handled well. Many times while in the pool/ restaurant area all the hand sanitizer stations were out. Decent wings and the fettuccine with shrimp was really good! Everything is expensive.

Shop has basic hotel stuff to buy and some pastries, snacks, ice cream and food. Said they opened at 9 but the one morning we went down before heading out that day they weren’t open and someone poolside said they’d open at 9:30.

Groceries, Do not waste your time at Pueblo. Only place I would shop is Food Center. It is 100x better selection and cleaner.

Hotel room accommodations nice, resort overall just average - not worth what it costs. Knowing what I know after visiting St Thomas and the experience overall I would have returned to Hawaii or Aruba over and over before vacationing here. Beaches and water around the island are beautiful indeed but really that is all. Fav beaches in order were Magens, Coki, Sapphire. No culture, locals are not welcoming, we had 1 server at 1 restaurant that was friendly during an entire week stay, parking anywhere is a nightmare, airport is a mess of a process.

Wonderful resort! Fully renovated and getting back to 100% due to Covid. Front desk staff could be friendlier but everyone else was great! Pool/Beach staff and area are awesome! Lots of elevators but well worth it to see the beauty of the island from your giant living room window and balcony! Will definitely go back!
