Owner description: Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake Railway) offers a delightful 9 mile return journey alongside Bala Lake, through the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Our 2ft narrow gauge steam trains give excellent views of the lake amid its surrounding pastoral and woodland scenery, and of the nearby mountains, Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy. The railway provides an ideal centrepiece for a day’s visit to Bala Lake. The round trip of 1 hour can be broken at any of the stations to enjoy other activities - a pleasant 10 minutes walk into Bala town for shopping or merely browsing. There is access to the lake shore at Llangower station for swimming, fishing or simply lazing by the waterside.

Had a lovely time on the Bala steam train and it's not over priced.
Lots of rail enthusiasts are involved in keeping the train and track in good order for visitors to enjoy.
Best to catch the train in Llanuwchllyn to Bala and then back to the station again. There is not a great deal to see in Bala but enough to keep you amused for an hour or so.

Went on the 1.20 ride on Saturday. Tickets were £26 return for two adults, two children (aged 14 and 9) and a dog (really appreciated the fact that dogs were welcome on board). Didn't really know what to expect... The ride was about 25 minutes long through the woods with an occasional view over the lake, met a few steam engines along the way which was nice to see, and got to the final station... there was a café and toilets there but nothing else... not even a village to look at... lovely experience to travel on a small steam train but nothing very exciting to see...

The railway itself is gorgeous, the little engines capturing all our imaginations. Alice and George B being our 4yo daughter's favourites.
That said, other than the run up the lake and back there really isn't much else to see. We were hoping for a couple of small village stops but soon realised that wasn't to be the case, I think we are spoilt by having the NYMR on our doorstep at home.
In general it is great to see small heritage railways like this still running and to be fair it is worth visiting to ensure the longevity of things like this in the future.
Had our daughter been older we could have maybe made more of the journey by taking a walk into the country from one of the stops but maybe that is for next time.
