“Beautiful tropical province without hot water, cable TV and air conditioner”
Reviewed 10 April 2017 for a stay in March 2017
people found this review helpful

Excellent owner Heather. House itself is very unusual and very comfortable if you don't need air conditioner. hot water and TV news.

House has everything you may need: shampoo and SPF creams, laundry detergent and surfing boards, washer-dryer, drinking water, soda, coffee-tea, alcohol, spices and condiments, tens of towels, insect repellents (it's important!). And very good internet speed. Walk-in-closets have many hangers (and mustiness smell - not great but adoptable). All other PLUSes listed before me in a previous reviews. I agree with all !

Minuses of house are 1) tween mattresses are very hard and uncomfortable (king bed is perfect), 2) no cable or satellite TV (only video), 3) no hot water in shower and in a kitchen, 4) open to nature bathroom is unusable due to millions of mosquitoes, 5) floor in a master bedroom bathroom always keeps water in a micro-lagoons, so it need to get special floor mate, 6) no kitchen hoods, 7) everyday you have uninvited visitors - neighbor's dogs when you are in and birds when you are out (take care of your foods!).
Around house minuses are: not great way to the "beach", take precautions if you are older than 60. Actually it is no beach down the hill, just pebble line of land with great view around. Don't forget to see ruins!

Total conclusion about this vacation property is very positive and I took away one point just because it has no hot water (even warm water was seen no longer than 30 sec and just couple of times). We were ready for absence of air conditioner and mosquitoes presence. But cold water shower for sure is healthy but not pleasant.

Great house in a great place with an greatest owner. Thank you, Heather. We'll always remember you and your very special home!

I am sure most people reading this, like me, are asking themselves why this guest did not mention to the water issue to me in the entire 7 days they were staying at Surfside. On day 2, I wrote to the family member who made the booking, this lady's young son, to ask if everything was ok and his response was words to the effect of 'everything is great, the house, the island, it's paradise!' The hot water is an instantaneous system that has to travel through the pipes to the taps once it has started to heat up. You simply need to leave it on, perhaps a little longer than with a tank system, before it runs hot. Nobody in the 3 years before or the 2 months since has had any issue with it and no adjustment has been made.
The twin bed mattresses are the exact same mattresses as the one in the master. They are firm but comfortable and I have even had a guest write to say she had had the best night's sleep in 30 years on them!
As for birds and dogs, it's an indoor/outdoor type of house, clearly seen in the photos, where everyone leaves all the doors folded back so that they are outside with nature even when they are inside, so to speak. Air conditioning is not what the house is about and it is not advertised as having it. There are screen doors in the bedrooms, excellent ceiling fans all round and 5 stand up fans that can be moved around as desired. The Caribbean tends to have mosquitos at certain times of the day, most people expect this and take the necessary precautions to avoid them including using the sprays and coils I provide. As for birds, the house is surrounded by rain forest style foliage, need I say more. There are a couple of beautifully behaved dogs in the area who occasionally visit. To date, everyone has either loved them or ignored them, mostly the former, with kids even writing me lovely notes saying how much they have enjoyed them.
The cooker is inside a chimney which has a vent at the top so it didn't really occur to me to have an electrically operated vent when there was a natural one! The master bath is a wet room with a stone floor. There are bathmats provided but the water dries up in no time anyway, just like it would on any stone floor in a sunny climate.

I corresponded with this lady's son more than any other prospective guest before he booked. At that time I was unaware that he was the child and not the parent, this only came to light on the day of arrival. One of the questions he asked was about the beach in front of the house. My answer was that it is a surf break, a pebble beach where you wouldn't really swim. I went on to say that within the estate, a 5 minute very slow drive without going back onto a government road, there is a beautiful sandy beach that is usually completely empty of visitors called Lava Flow. We made an active choice to not have cable TV, we are trying to provide a different experience from home ie a 'get away from it all' type of experience. There is a DVD player with several DVD's, books and board games. In the three years we have been renting this home to guests nobody except this lady have mentioned the lack of TV.
All in all, I feel the problems here were a lack of communication firstly between the lady's son and herself (she didn't appear to know where she was going to be staying and clearly it wasn't her idea of her ideal vacation) and then between the family and myself. I wrote three times to ask if they needed anything, I spent an hour at the beginning showing them around the house, explaining all the facilities etc.
On the basis of 'you can't please all the people all the time' I want to say that we have three years of reviews, several repeat guests and a whole lot of very happy people who have said their experience at Surfside has been positively life changing. I would hope that although this lady has said she would recommend the house to her friends that those friends be the sort of people who would like what it has to offer ie a peaceful oasis, set in rain forest style foliage with nothing around it except trees and beautiful flowers with the ocean right out front, cool breezes, no TV, the sounds of bird song at dawn.

The house was very well thought out and had a beautiful view. Beaches were close, grocery was close, and the open floor plan made for a perfect get-away. The owners were very friendly and easy people with whom to work.

Thanks for taking the time to review Surfside. We are really glad you had a great time and glad that you mentioned how close everything is. Sometimes we we say things are a ten or fifteen minute drive I think people imagine that means 10 or 15 miles like it would in the US. Here, it's about 2 miles, with great views along the way! We hope to welcome you again in the future.

“Paradise in Tortola”
Reviewed 26 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Surfside Gardens Oct 29 - Nov 4 for our anniversary. Let me start by saying the property and the house are gorgeous and well-maintained. The views from the property are picturesque and absolutely breathtaking. As beautiful as the pictures on the website are, they don't do the property justice! As noted before, this house is an open-air concept without AC, but has plenty of fans if needed. The house has a fully equipped kitchen with all of the appliances, pots, pans and utensils you could need. The bathrooms are lovely and complete with plenty of towels. As beautiful as the house and surroundings are, what truly made our stay unforgettable was the hospitality of the owners. Just as other travelers have written, Heather was amazing from the day we first inquired about the property throughout the duration of our stay. She treated us like family! She guided us with helpful information every step of the way - from our ferry travel, to our rental car, our excursions and restaurant choices, and so much more. Her son guided us from the ferry dock to the house and she even had groceries waiting for us at the house on the evening of our arrival! There are plenty of maps and a folder at the house provided by the owners with information on the island and excursions - which we found extremely helpful. This truly is a special place and we would recommend it to any who are considering visiting the area. Thank you Heather for an unforgettable anniversary week!

“If AC is important, wouldn't consider - Need 4 Wheel drive”
Reviewed 16 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

This is a fabulous house. They have everything you would need to cook for yourself. the place is absolutely lovely with awesome views. It is a two bedroom, two bath home with a beautiful kitchen and living room and two large out door decks with fabulous view of ocean, other islands, and the rain forest.
It was built as an open-air concept, which actually makes this home more lovely and unique. However, we happened to be there when it was exceptionally rainy, which made it very humid with lots of mosquitoes. We were not aware there was no AC until we got there. Unfortunately this lovely home with view was not used much by us, because we had to find AC and get away from the bugs. The last day there was a sea breeze ( which I assume is that way most of the time) and was such a lovely day, we just hung out at the house. I must say, they do have lots of fans and lots of mosquito fighting coils, sprays and such, just thought you may want to know. I believe booking later in the season, this house would have been superb. All the rain they have had lately, I believe made it more humid. Sad for us. the place is great and so is the owner Heather! Because her place is difficult to find on the island, she personally came to us so we could follow her with our rental car. You do need to have a rental car if staying here, and preferably 4 wd

Thank you for your lovely review. November and May are rainy months in Tortola so the island does tend to be somewhat humid at this time. We made a conscious decision to make the home AC free, something that shows in the listing, because it was built as an indoor/outdoor house with doors and windows that open up to nature. The cost of running AC here is huge so not having it allows us to rent the whole 2 bedroom house to 4 oe even 6 guests at about the same rate per night or less than a standard hotel room here for 2.
For most of the year there are amazing sea breezes at the house, so much so that we have had requests for extra blankets!
Thanks again for your kind words about the house, we are very happy you enjoyed your visit.

“Beautiful, relaxing, modern, with fabulous hosts!”
Reviewed 9 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

We are experienced Caribbean Island vacationers, and this was by far the best accommodations we have rented! The Chapman's know the island, and will bend over backward to be sure that you get the best of your BVI stay. From the moment you book your stay in their beautiful home, they are there to help you prepare your visit to Tortola. They assisted us with car rental, taxi transport, ferry, and they even dropped by Christmas Day to deliver an item they realized we may run low on! Before you arrive they send you information concerning restaurants and fun things to do so that you can plan in advance should you choose. Heather met our family at the ferry and guided us to the house. I rode with her in her car, and along the way she pointed out landmarks and gave us driving tips. Once at the house, she thoroughly explained where everything was situated.
The house truly is beautiful. You will be just as enchanted in person, as you were while viewing the photos on-line. The view was incredible. One of our favorite things to do was to have coffee on the second floor balcony as the sun rose. The gardens are breathtaking. It doesn't matter which window you are looking out, you will always see amazing color. It is quiet. We were there for 8 days and never saw or heard another person on the beach (which is a short 3 minute walk down a trail). Due to its proximity to the water, you will need mosquito repellent if you tend to be bitten. We wore the bracelets, and sprayed with a natural spray containing citronella and lemon. We traveled with our children ages 11,12,14, and 15. They also enjoyed the property. It is a wonder to explore! The kitchen has everything you need to prepare a meal. The bathrooms are large, clean, and there are plenty of towels!
The location of the house is ideal. Far enough away from others to allow privacy, yet close enough to town to run for items should you need anything. If you are a stargazer you will enjoy the night sky. There is no light pollution to interfere with your view as you gaze out over the bay.
Don't hesitate to book Surfside Gardens!
