Cox and Company limited “Volcanic Island Experience and Mud Bath”.
I took this tour organized by Princess Cruise lines when my cruise ship visited Castries in St Lucia.
The guide, Modwena, was very friendly and informative, while the driver, Terence, was good-humoured and drove safely. We had several photo stops along the way to the Mud Baths located in the caldera at Soufrière. Some of them seemed like an opportunity to support local businesses selling refreshments and souvenirs rather than the best vantage points for a view, but we still managed to take some lovely photos, especially of Petit Piton and Grand Piton with the town of Soufrière below. The bath experience was fun. Luckily, we arrived relatively early in the morning so there were not too many people there already. Later it got very crowded, and as there are only three changerooms (that are a bit dark and unpleasant) I imagine things could get difficult. The idea is to enter the warm baths to get wet first, then proceed through to rub the grey mud all over. Attendants can help with this. There is also some black mud that many people used for decoration. You then wait 5-10 minutes for the mud to dry before returning to the hot baths to rinse off. I could definitely feel the difference on my skin afterwards. I recommend that you use an old swimming costume as the mud will discolour what you wear. You should also remove jewellery in case it is affected by the minerals in the mud and water (eg Sulphur). After our mud bath, we were driven a little higher for a guided tour of the bubbling and steaming mud springs. The commentary provided here by the guides was fascinating. On the way back to Castries we stopped at a restaurant for a complementary glass of rum punch and more photos. In all, an excellent excursion.
