Was able to see both dolphins and whales on the trip. The whales flipped there tails upwards as they descended. The dolphins swam and darted in and out from underneath the boat and out of front. We went out on the large catamaran and felt completely safe the entire journey. Honestly , would have enjoyed the trip out to sea even if we had not see whales or dolphins.
We loved our boat ride on the Passion. We did not see any fish or ocean mammals. But our family had a great time anyway.
We've tried all of the whale watching operators in Dominica over the years and the Achorage operation is definitely the one we like best. Andrew Armour, whose family own the Anchorage, has been running these trips ( and studying the whales) for over 20 years. His boats carry hydroponic listening devices to help locate the whales and on our recent trip he was as excited to meet up with a favourite sperm whale called Canopener (named for the notch in her tail fluke) as were the passengers. Canopener obliged by coming right up to the boat, cruising under us and around for the cameras before raising her huge tail fluke and diving down. On the way back in Andrew turned the boat so we could spend a few minutes with a group of spotted dolphins that came right across our bow. Andrew and his crew were very safety conscious and super helpful, especially to my elderly mother, helping her across the deck to make sure she was able to get the best views of the whales. All in all a great experience.
great service and got to see whales.. the driver actually stopped for us to view the whales and take pictures. Enjoyed it!
We hadn't planned on doing the tour but were just checking into the hotel and informed that this tour was about to occur and that there were still spots available so we jumped on the opportunity (I guess they only do tour few times a week so we had good timing that day). We didn't sight any whales for first 1.5 hours of the tour but then we finally sighted them. The 4 man crew was great and very informative. This tour was highlight of our stay at Anchorage Hotel which otherwise sucked big time. We were fortunate we did tour first day arrival in island because the weather although not great (it was overcast) wasn't terrible (pouring rain next 3 days).
This was a whale watching trip on a catamaran that took more than 3 hours. Overall, very entertaining, educative, and safe. Our crew was skilled and persistent to the point of staying out until whales were sighted. Our tour guide and captain was on a class of his own, knowledgeable and attentive to the point of becoming one of the highlights of the trip. We saw whales on two separate occasions, learned quite a bit about them, and where also treated to some breathtaking views of the island of Dominica. While they offer refreshments, the trip takes a while, so it is a good idea to pack sunscreen, water, and some snacks.
