“Nice property, but not great”

We were booked to stay in this unit but shortly before arrival were informed that we were being relocated to 501 which was similar but supposedly contained some upgrades like the covered rooftop terrace. Overall the accommodations were spacious and well appointed and for the surrounding area were like a palatial retreat. The kitchen was dirty, we washed every dish before using them and multiple pots were missing handles, the pans were beyond their life expectancy with non stick coating badly peeled and everything else just tattered and worn. We spent at least an hour each day trying to swat house flies, I think our total was 15 dead, 6 wounded in 5 days. The grounds are lovely with what could be described as a butterfly garden but desperately in need of a pool. Yes, you can use the hotel pool across the street but we didn't want to stay at a hotel and it was very busy on the weekend with lots of kids. The surrounding area is depressing, people washing their hands in mud puddles from the street, houses advertising Duchas and Banos (showers and bathes) because it seemed apparent not everyone had running water and lots of reminders this is truly 3rd world. The people were lovely, especially the nice old man that pushed/drove his bike full of vegetables to the compound 3 days a week and sold his wares for next to nothing as well as the owner of Sabor de Bamboo who had great food and wine/liquor for sale. This was our 2nd of 5 stops in Ecuador and we cut the stay in half, along with reducing another by 9 days so that we could try to find a bigger town with more amenities. The beach was accessible mostly at low tide and the water temperature was perfect. We walked a long way into San Jacinto on day one looking for a store and the dirt and poverty was more than we bargained for, though we've been traveling central and Latin America for almost 5 months and thought we had acclimated. The property manager, Lourdes was spectacular and really helpful in all things.
