Sushi in Kakamas?

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 03 May 2021
The attitude of the staff of a hotel can tell one much about the people of an area. The staff were extremely friendly and made you feel like that you were at your locally frequented restaurant. Although this was our first visit, it seemed like we were old friends.
Meat lovers have often said that the mutton of the Northern Cape tasted differently from the mutton served in the rest of South Africa, due to the vegetation the sheep eat. The Hotel chef prepared the mutton beautifully and enhanced the flavour of the meat, to have a second helping does not require too much convincing. An a la carte menu, is an alternative to the carvery dinner. Sushi was offered on the a la carte and the Chef again did not disappoint.
The room was spacious and the card on my pillow which read "Have you called your love ones today" was touching. The outside temperature made a visit to the out door swimming pool a must, for sun downers.
The name of hotel "Gateway" puzzled me. We were in the area to see the Augrabies Waterfall. The name now makes sense, it is the gate way from the Augrabies to; Cape Town, Upington and Namibia.
It is such a pity it so far away to visit again.

We visited the restaurant on New Year's day for lunch. Although the staff - very few of them since it is Jan 1st - were very friendly and helpfull, we were left for an hour after ordering our food without any help or insight why. There were simply no service to get something to drink. Some of the guests complained about a 40 minute wait for a toasted ham and cheese sandwich! Our food, two burgers (the same) and a pizza came to the table at the 80 minute mark with the meat of one of the burgers still raw on the inside. When our waiter asked the kitchen - it is open enough for patrons to see and hear what is going on - why everything is slow, she was yelled upon and it was stated that "we are only two in the kitchen today". All things considered I would like to go back some day to see if they are better on a normal business day.

We stayed in one of the new self catering units. It is very nice, beautiful. Clean and spacious.

    The food is excellent.

They can perhaps give instructions on how stove works in room. And maybe include breakfast in price for accommodation.

    Further very nice.

Compared to other hotels/ B&Bs in the Northern Cape, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the hotel. The room was beautiful, clean and neat. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant and bar was very good. I really enjoyed the swimming pool after the heat. Parking area is secure. I can definitely recommend staying at this hotel.
