“pick your poison”
Review of Rose River Falls

Everyone else's comments are spot on. If it's rained within a few days (or raining during) of your visit, give this one a go.

We've started on the fire road and we've ended on the fire road. Starting on the falls and ending on the fire road is much much easier than starting on the fire road and ending with the falls.

BUT, the views are actually better if you start on the fire road and end with the falls. It's the same scene, but it's really about the angles you see them. you get different perspectives and angles depending on CW or CCW. When you start on the fireroad, as you start hiking up the hill of the falls trail, the view you have of the falls in front of you is much better than hiking DOWN with the falls behind you. Its definitely a beautiful view keeping the falls in front of you as you hike up hill.

so...pick your poison. We've done both and they both have their pros/cons.

- A must-do hike
- Do it clockwise
- Bring plenty of water
- Bug spray a must this time of year
- Wear good hiking shoes
- Lots of swimming holes
- 4 mile loop in 3 hours w/young kids
- Right next to Fisher’s Gap parking lot

I can’t believe I’ve never hiked this before! After many hikes in Shenandoah I was in awe of the beautiful scenery on this hike. If you enjoy hiking by a river for most of your hike, you will love this hike. The waterfalls are great, but the incredible scenery is what makes this a SNP gem. The parking lot is right next to (North) Fisher’s Gap overlook. At the end of the parking lot the Appalachian Trail passes through. The Rose River Falls Loop starts straight across Skyline Drive. The recommendation to do it clockwise returning on the Fire Road was a great suggestion. Follow the directions on the cement posts to the left off the fire road. Go half a mile down to the next turn to your right. The Rose River falls are not very big, but still picturesque. There are plenty of swimming holes along the way. I carried my two year old in a backpack for most of the hike and it was quite a workout on the way up after the falls. It had rained recently so bring good hiking shoes for this trail. Our 8 year old daughter had no issues with the hike and my wife carried our 3 month old with no problem too. Follow the suggestions to bring plenty of water. This hike is in the shade for the most part, but it was very humid along the river. Bug spray this time of year is also a must. After the tough, but beautiful uphill along the river, you get back to the fire road with another set of falls in front of you. Look for the cement post across the road for directions to a .2 mile hike up to Dark Hollow Falls. Return to the fire road and hike back up to the parking lot. Took us about 3 hours and it was stunningly beautiful the whole way.

Bring your water and have on good shoes. This gem of a falls is a not-to-far of a hike from the parking area on Skyline Drive. Flow is better in the spring and slows down during the warm summer months. We've gone a couple of times and enjoyed the falls each time.

The clockwise hike returning on a fire road road near the bottom of Dark Hollow Falls was our favorite hike. Views are everywhere, and this hike along the Rose River was a refreshing change.
