I recently completed a five-day kayaking trip with Florida Outdoor Adventures (FOA). The owner and lead guide, Dave K., runs a smooth operation. The terrain traveled is interesting, the kayaks and camping gear used is high quality, and the food is satisfying. I recommend a trip with FOA without hesitation.
From the welcome through the departure, our guide Kevin was fantastic. We took the 3 day overnight kayaking trip. The entire trip was well planned and well executed.
Kevin was really well in sync with our group. He was laid back, but also super attentive. It was a primitive kayaking/camping trip, but Kevin's hospitality felt like a 5-star hotel, despite being one person with 6 clients on the trip.
Kevin always had information available when (or before) it was needed. Over the days he got to know the two groups on the trip and started interacting more personally.
The paddling was a little bit of a concern for myself and my companion as we had never paddled really, beyond 20-30 minutes once or twice. But it turned out to be just fine and a little persistence was all it took to travel up to 5 hours a day.
The paddling was my favorite part of the trip - it was so serene with occasional wildlife sightings, occasional commentary by our guide Kevin, and fun conversation with our travel companions.
The camping was easy and well planned. The bugs stayed away in the evenings, but in the mornings we had little biting no-see-um bugs some of the time. Definitely recommend having head 'mosquito' netting, just in case you need it. I even brought pants with built in insect deterrent (I wore them, but can't say it it was any better than long pants....). Another bug solution is to just walk out of your tent and into the water in the morning (it works! and the water even felt warmer than the early morning air!). Also as soon as the breeze started the bugs went away. We had no problem with insects either while paddling or at night.
We built a camp fire each night which was mostly unnecessary but still super nice to sit around and talk.
I recommend taking a water proof digital camera and not a phone (it won't work anyway most of the time). Just completely get away from the everyday.
They provided all the equipment and even unexpected small extras (such as camp chairs). The equipment was all in good shape and easy to use.
The food was good as well !!
I went with three friends, all of us women in our mid 30s to early 40s, and had a fabulous time on the three day, two night kayak trip. We had all been on kayaking day trips before, but never on a multi-day kayaking trip. Also, though we are healthy and enjoy outdoor activities, we are not really athletic, and so were a little worried about the intensity of the activity, but we found it to be just right for us.
Our guide, Kevin, was top notch! We felt safe the entire time. We learned so much from him about the Everglades ecosystems and wildlife. He gave us pointers on kayaking more efficiently, and was continuously positive and cheerful from the morning coffee through the evening campfires. He was a great cook, and we enjoyed all three meals and snacks throughout the day. There were two vegetarians and both had plenty to eat.
We saw lots of wildlife including dolphins, rays, turtles, fish, osprey, a bald eagle, cormorants, etc. We camped on Picnic Key, and saw beautiful sunsets from the beach. A highlight of the three days was the mangrove tunnel which we paddled through, and swimming off the beaches.
The one downside that we encountered was the no-see-ums (small biting insects) that were only active in the morning before the breeze started. Once we were on (or in!) the water, or in the evenings when there was breeze, we had no trouble with the insects.
I highly recommend this to anyone of reasonable fitness who wants to get off the beaten path, and enjoys a little bit of adventure.
Dave did all the details and provided sage guidance with good spirit.
It was a pretty raw landscape with inspiring niches of rejuvenation. Best beach wandering ever. National Park and all. Always felt safe, comfortable, and alive. What could be better? Stars aligned, it was perfect for us two.
Every positive in the other reviews, add that here.
I had the great luck to be able to join a 3-day beginner kayaking/camping trip in the Everglades this weekend. Our guide Dave was the best combination of trip planner, guide, story teller and cook. This trip will go down in my memories as one of my best memories ever! I highly recommend Florida Outdoor Adventures!
Did the three-day trip with my 16-year-old nephew in December 2017. David and Kevin were outstanding guides. They provided great meals each day and kept us busy the entire trip. The daily kayaking effort was perfect for us. We saw great sunsets, dolphins, and even a manatee. We plan on doing the 5-day trip in the future.
