This was our first stay at Ballathie House, but definitely not our last. We know the area well and usually stay at lovely hotel in Dunkeld, but thought we'd have a change this time. I'm so glad we did.
The hotel is lovely - nice and quiet with a wonderful air of calm efficiency. Yes, it looks a wee bit tired in places, but this adds to rather than detracts from its charm.
The setting on the banks of the River Tay lends itself to either taking a slow stroll along the many paths, or sitting having a drink looking out on the river.
The food is excellent, and tremendous value at £55 per head for the dinner menu. The wine list includes some wines that are seldom seen on other lists.
Service could not have been better; without exception all the staff were great examples of what good customer service looks like.
We look forward to our next visit.

Where to start from the sweeping driveway to the beautiful house. Balathie House is indeed a hidden gem. From the minute you enter the hotel you are warmly greeted by a member of staff. All the staff were beautifully dressed at breakfast and during the dinner service. The hotel is beautiful. The location is amazing and the food is magnificent. The two AA Rosette doesn’t do it justice. It deserves a higher grading. Breakfast was lovely. Everything you wanted and more. Nothing was too much bother for the staff. The dinner was beautifully presented and well served. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough in fact I really do not want to recommend it because then it will become available to more people. Another lovely touch was the owner coming around the dinner tables at night speaking to his guests lovely. We will definitely be back. Sooner rather than later
We stayed in a riverside room because we had our dog Ollie with us. I attach a picture of the fabulous view

We stayed here with our wee dog for 2 nights.

Very welcoming lady at reception and all staff were very friendly which was lovely. We stayed in one of the big rooms in the house and it was great! Very spacious bedroom and a gorgeous old art deco period bathroom which I loved! The only thing I would say is that the carpet, wallpaper and furniture were a bit tired looking and in need of an update, but the charm of the old period features made up for it!

We dined in the restaurant on the first night and I have to say it is one of the best meals we have had. Deserves a Michelin. Service was excellent and the food was delicious!

Only downside is that this is the only menu/food available on site and no option for a less formal meal or room service and at 55 a head it's lot if you're staying a few nights.

The breakfast in the morning was delicious also and the grand dining room was lovely to sit in.

Overall, I would definitely stay here again, hopefully in the winter when I can enjoy drinks in the bar by the fire.

It’s 35 years since I last visited Ballathie so I was keen to see what differences had taken place in the interim. The Scottish Baronial architecture and ambience were of course unchanged but not surprisingly the décor had been updated in a restrained and thoughtful way. We particularly liked the elegant, French-inspired Morning Room where we had pre-dinner drinks. As a Covid precaution we stayed in the Riverside rooms, just an eight minute gentle walk from the main house. Our first floor room had a balcony overlooking the River Tay and was very quiet and comfortable. Food and service in the hotel restaurant were excellent and could not have been bettered. The staff were without exception friendly, courteous and efficient. The estate lies in 1500 acres and we explored the woodland path along the bank of River Tay, full of early summer flowers, while watching salmon anglers fishing from boats on the water below us. On another day we went on a long walk through old woodland elsewhere on the estate and made friends with a herd of inquisitive young bullocks across the fence of their grazing field. The colourful gardens immediately around the hotel are beautifully maintained and a new, accessible-friendly path down to the river bank is being built. All in all a memorable stay; we would like to have stayed longer – but will be back!

Room tip: The two-storey Riverside rooms have a lift to the first floor (not in use due Covid during our stay).

Ballathie House Hotel is set in beautiful, accessible grounds. The welcome was warm and genuine, despite the hotel being very busy. The food is second to none, with the 5 course dinner being a particular treat.
Our Riverside rooms were of a good standard, very clean and well equipped, the beds comfortable and clean.
The staff of the hotel are cheerful and efficient. A special mention for Susie and Michael, who were so pleasant and attentive.
We will definitely be back - first class all round.
