Owner description: Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Monkeyland first opened its gates to the public in 1998 amidst much skepticism, a sanctuary of this kind had never been attempted before; multiple primate species all running free and together in one big forest. But despite the fears it was a huge success and the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary has set a standard that other sanctuaries now aspire to. 12 hectares of indigenous forest is home to over 500 primates of 11 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Hanuman and Spectacled Langur, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

Our kids loved it and the guide we had was very informative and easy. It was nice to see the monkeys so close.

We have visited Monekyland on 2 different occasions and it's a great opportunity to see primates up close. Only one species, the vervet monkey, is native Africa as the other residents are rescue animals that had been kept as pets or other situations.

Unfortunately this place is crawling with mosquitos and my whole family was being bitten to death. Not the fault of monkeyland of course. what was unacceptable is that 3 or 4 minutes into the tour we asked to leave due to the number of bites we were getting. The guide refused and made us endure another hour of the tour getting bite after bite. In fact I think she enjoyed our discomfort and took it slow on purpose. There must be a procedure to get people out if necessary and this not only ruined our experience of monkeyland but also the next 3-4 days of our holiday. If you go out on lots of spray and be prepared - I had over 40 bites in my legs alone

There are about 600 monkeys from 11 different species in this 12 hectare free-roaming sanctuary. I will recommend that you go early in the morning because it gets quite busy later in the day. Because I was early I was lucky enough to walk through the sanctuary with my own guide. Clive was great. You get to see the monkeys up close and they seem not to be bothered by your presence. There are feeding tables for the monkeys every fifty meters or so where they gather for food and you can get a closer look at them. They do have citronella there to rub on for bugs before you embark on your journey through the beautiful natural forest, but I must have missed a spot because I got bitten by a mosquito anyway. This sanctuary boasts one of the longest hanging bridges in the southern hemisphere. I will recommend visiting both Monkeyland and Birds of Eden together. They are next door to each other and it is a bit cheaper if you opt to visit both. I'd say its worth a visit, especially if you have kids.
