Historic working farm in the Karoo

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 28 Apr 2021
We had an excellent experience with the owner of Kuilfontein Stable & Paddock Cottages. Due to a positive Covid test, we had to cancel our booking at the last moment. Regardless of the owner's strict cancellation policy, Penny willingly offered to postpone our stay. Weeks later, we received a warm welcome by the staff and were delighted with our accommodation in the Paddocks, a spacious self-catering unit, overlooking the expanse of Karoo grassland. We pre-ordered a tasty dinner, which was put in the fridge for us, along with breakfast cereal, fruit etc. This working farm is a short drive off the N1. We will definitely choose to stay there again when we next travel.
Date of stay: April 2021
Room Tip: The Paddocks offer spacious self-catering units, with food options, The Stables are compact rooms...

My wife and I have often stayed at “the cottages” when traveling between Durban and Cape Town. The cottages offer a wonderful relaxing break and the meals are a treat. The Karoo lamb this time gave a new and delicious twist on an old favourite. Highly recommended!

We arrived, tired, after driving from Wellington, and thoroughly enjoyed our over-night stay. All the guests seemed to arrive at about the same time as us - 4:30 to 5:30. We settled into our quaint room at the back of the stables and ambled along for drinks at 6. There is a cosy pub, lovely summer outside seating and separate sheltered eating facilities. We found ourselves with two other couples - doing the same route - in the main dining area and were treated to a really pleasing dinner. The bed was comfortable and we slept like logs. We chose to breakfast early, at 7, and shared the glassed-in room with another couple. The breakfast was also good. I specially liked the banana bread!

Room tip: There are two rooms at the back in a quaint setting.

Penny and Lexi and staff all go the extra mile to ensure a memorable stay. The dinner was excellent, the rooms are tidy with all amenities to be expected. The location is en route to Cape Town and the Garden Route.

We had a great stay and would recommend to friends. Great location very friendly hosts
The breakfast could be more substantial with fruit juices and yogurt and fresh fruit
We would have preferred the lamb to be roasted and sliced rather than "pulled"

Thanks Dawn and Roy for your comments. With regards to the dinner, however we did make you lamb casserole as per your request for dinner and we do have fruit and yoghurt on our breakfast menu.

We arrived at Kuilfontein Stables in the late afternoon, the perfect time for photography and you can't beat it for great Karoo scenery with windmills, 'vlaktes', sunsets and overall Karoo charm. We had a delightful room very conveniently situated right next to the dining area. They served the most delicious, succulent and juicy shredded Karoo lamb for dinner. The host Penny was most helpful in guiding us via Graaff Reinet to get to Prince Albert via Meiringspoort rather than going on the N1. Overall an excellent stop over on our way to the Cape.
