“Comfortable and spacious character cottage in a beautiful rural setting”
Reviewed 10 February 2013 for a stay in July 2012

Devon is one of the most beautiful counties in England and I particularly enjoyed my stay in Picklet Mead cottage in Southleigh, a small village about four miles inland from Beer and Branscombe.

The cottage is both comfortable and spacious. As it dates from the 16th century the doorways were rather low and I had to be careful on the winding staircase, but it is full of character with exposed beams in the sitting room and the kitchen. It has been tastefully modernised with new windows and a wood burning stove that provided ample warmth and cheerfulness on a rainy evening. The cottage was spotlessly clean and equipped with everything I needed. The garden is a sun trap and I was able to partk outside the garden gate.

There are many cliff top walks and characterful pubs and restaurants within a few miles.

Altogether, it was a delightful holiday and I shall certainly be going there again

“Charming cottage in idealic setting”
Reviewed 22 October 2012 for a stay in June 2012

Despite daily rain we had a wonderful week in Picket Mead. The cottage is comfortable with very comfortable beds and bedding and upstairs bathroom. The shower was very functional with plenty of hot water. Due to low water pressure the bath really could not be used as it would take forever to fill it. The cottage dates back 300-400 years so interesting features such as low beams are present. I found this charming but I suspect someone over six feet may find this a challenge!
Other than the charm of staying in an ancient cottage what I loved about Picket Mead is the lovely setting. The views for the windows were amazing with the very best of England right outside your door. The country church right next door was enchanting. Tramping through the surrounding country lanes and paths (a walking book was supplied by Marion the owner) made the holiday unforgettable. The area is remarkably beautiful and Picket Mead a great base from which to enjoy it! I hope to return one day.

Thank you for saying that you found the cottage idyllic. Once there is a period when the cottage is unoccupied we will ask a plumber to correct the problem with the slow running bath.

“We had a lovely relaxing, cosy and comfortable stay”
Reviewed 21 September 2012 for a stay in September 2012

The situation of the cottage is lovely, quiet peaceful countryside.
The cottage is roomy and comfortable. We enjoyed coming down to a nice warm kitchen in the mornings, the only sounds being that of the countryside and a few farming vehicles.
We had cosy evenings by the log burner. Ideal situation to enjoy some peace and quiet yet only 10 minutes from the delightful fishing village of Beer.

“Quiet and relaxing”

We stayed from 14th - 16th September, booking at the last minute and had a wonderful time. The cottage was well aired, the wood burner was highly efficient in warming the living room in the evening and together with the night storage heaters it was warm to come down to in the mornings. If you are not used to a woodburner, then you might not use the vent systems properly which would mean that you could burn the logs quicker than you intended, but instructions on use are there and easy to follow. The bedroom was large and comfortable and looked out over the church and surrounding countryside.

The surrounding area is quiet and tranquil but you have to remember that it is a working agricultural area and the tractors are a lot bigger than a car so take care along the (narrow) lanes.

Beer is a lovely little coastal village and only 10 minutes drive away (unless encounters with cows and/or tractors slow you down) with good walking and good eating establishments.

“Charming rural cottage - a great base to explore the South Devon coastline”
Reviewed 11 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Although a bit difficult to find down narrow lanes, we appreciated the quiet rural location in the small village. There were no shops or services in walking distance so you definitely need a car, but it was a great base to explore the Devon coastline. We really liked the coast walk nearby from Beer to Branscombe and the cliffs east of Budleigh Salterton. The cottage was charming with some genuine features like the stone sit in fireplace and beams (although a little bit low in the living room, so anyone tall watch out!) The cottage had been renovated recently and had a new log burning stove which made it quite cosy as we used it most evenings. Everything in the kitchen and bathroom was simple, functional and clean. Beds were comfortable, a baby cot was provided and the eclectic furniture added to the character. Overall we enjoyed our stay and felt it was good value for money.
