“If you want metal art, this is the place”

Village Artistique de Noailles

A very unusual (for me) artist colony set in a rundown, ramshackle and ugly section of Port-au-Prince. Yet, the artistry is evident. All sorts of metal sculpture from simple Christmas decorations to elaborate serious art pieces. Be sure to bring cash and a vehicle to take your prizes away. I got two wall pieces each about 2' square for $150.

Having spent 3 days in other parts of Croix de Bouquets, this was a good look at what the possibilities are for Haiti. This was like an oasis, while it had the sidewalk run bar hole-in-the-wall, it could use a small deck, some funky coffee houses, and some street music. All of the art, mainly metal sculptures and some paintings were done right there in their studios. They take commission works, and one of our friends is having a nice metal sign created for his orphanage, at a very good price.

We could have spent 3-4 hours. Lots of studios spread over several blocks. All friendly - though I must add that all over Haiti I found friendly people with great smiles.

A short drive from PAP proper, this artists' coop is the center of metal work in Haiti. There are many places there, and a lot of repetition of design. But once your eyes adjust, you will start to see some of the unique pieces worthy of being called art. Everything can be bargained for. One thing - prepare yourself -- this is a profoundly poor place. Among the crafts and the craftsman, you will see nearly naked children, plenty of garbage and literally starving dogs. Spend some money there - they really need it. Also, you may find a cold drink, but there is no food or snacks to be had.

An amazing place with unlimited potential.

You have come to heart of the Haitian artistic metalwork. Nestled amongst the gaping holes in the road, unfinished construction, (open sewers?), cats, kids etc there are tons of little shops/ateliers everywhere with artisans sitting on the ground, on stumps, on seats, hammering away creating some very beautiful work!

Walk around, visit the stores, speak with the artists, settle on a 'mutually' agreed price and choose your art. Remember, this is Haiti and try not to get the 'very best' price as often that extra dollar can mean a lot to these families - they are, for the most part, very poor.

You can't help wondering why the community doesn't make more of what they have. Why don't they fix their village and drive more business their way?
Sweep, paint, repair, rebuild... It remains a mystery.

Just an aside, I was surprised to see that There is an LDS Church in this village.
