“Sitting on the dock of the Bay”

We had a great week at The Bay in September and rented out No 42 which is a semi-detached house which shares a view and grounds with No 43 which has a mirror image layout inside. If you’re in a large party of 12 you can rent Nos 42 and 43 together as there is an interconnecting door between both living rooms. As we were on our own the interconnecting door remained firmly locked, but that didn’t stop the noise from next door being rather obtrusive at times. There was a baby and a loud woman next door, both of whom liked to shriek a lot and between them they made enough noise to wake the dead. Next time we go on holiday we aren’t going anywhere near a property with an interconnecting door as it’s just too intrusive noise wise.

No 42 is an “upside-down” houses in that the bedroom accommodation is on the ground floor and the stairs lead up to a first floor lounge, kitchen and diner. By the front door to No 42 was a decked dining area and our hot tub (which we didn’t use). The decked dining area had a wrought iron table and chairs for up to 12 people. It certainly wasn’t warm enough to eat outside on a September evening, but I can imagine it would make a fantastic spot for a barbecue or some alfresco dining in the middle of a heat wave. The views of the sea are stunning.

On the ground floor we had an entrance hall, a bathroom, a master bedroom with an ensuite shower room, a second double bedroom and a third bedroom with a bunk bed. A rather steep flight of stairs lead up to an extremely spacious living room with dining area and kitchen. There was also a small utility room just off the kitchen. The living accommodation was absolutely stunning - really spacious, light and bright. A pair of double doors led out onto our own private balcony which was kitted out with a pair of wrought iron love seats and matching tables. Despite it being late September we were extremely lucky with the weather and spent a good deal of time sitting out on the balcony during the day drinking in the view and the sea air. Even when it wasn’t really warm enough to sit outside we often sat on the sofas inside with the double doors left open for the fresh air. The view was absolutely stunning - a 180 degree panorama over the sea. The house was beautifully furnished and very comfortable and I can honestly say it lacked for nothing. Similarly the appliances in the kitchen area were all very good and there was more than enough crockery, cutlery and general catering gizmos to feed a small army.

Despite there being no fenced in separate garden for our dog there was enough of a lawn area for her to wander about in and do her “business”. Unfortunately we couldn’t open the door and let her out unsupervised as we would with an enclosed garden as she is liable to wander off in an attempt to be sociable with any passer by. The road around the site at the Bay is not particularly busy but we still didn’t want to take the risk as she has no road sense whatsoever. However, we managed admirably by keeping a weather eye on her every time she asked to go out.

And now onto the downsides of the Bay….despite looking at the Bay on Google Earth before we booked, the place did hold one of two surprises for us. First off we had no idea that the slope down to the beach was quite so steep. Secondly we failed to appreciate just how very remote the Bay is from civilization and how very narrow the road to and from the place is.

The Bay describes itself as “just a short stroll from the shore” which is true…but what they fail to point out that that “short stroll” is down a VERY steep slope and the climb back up again is horrendous. We were hoping to be able to take our dog down to the sea several times a day due to the lack of private garden with our property. However the steer arduousness of the walk was such we could only manage it once a day at the most. The climb down was steep but manageable as there was a well trodden path. The only pitfall here was if it had rained as the slope became more than a little slippery and you did have to watch your step if you didn’t want to tumble down the hill quicker than you liked. The climb back up again was something else - I’ve never known a hill like it for steepness. It took a good 10 to 15 minutes to climb back up to the Bay from the seashore below and by the time you reached the top you would be covered in sweat and your calf muscles screaming. This is a walk that could be managed once a day at the most….much to our dog’s disgust, as with her “four paw drive” she scampered up and down the hill without drawing extra breath.

Although the Bay is only 3 miles from Looe and 3 miles from Polperro I suspect that is measured from the coastal path. If you’re in a car the route is a tad more winding and long winded. Add in the fact that the road to the Bay is single track you’ll spend a good deal of your time either pulling over to let other cars pass or reversing into the nearest available passing space. There is no quick trip in and out of the road to Talland as you’ll be continually reversing or waiting for oncoming traffic to go by. There is a bus service on the main road between Looe and Polperro but whatever you do don’t get off the bus there and try to walk to the Bay…..it’s such a steep climb you’ll lose the will to live. Reception will call a taxi for you if you are without a car, but to be honest it’s not really the sort of place you can stay at without a car. There is no shop on site and nearest mini-mart is in Pleynt some 3½ miles away. Although Asda, Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose all deliver to the Bay, if you forget anything your nearest big supermarket is a Morrisons in Liskeard some 12 miles away.

Would we go back to the Bay is the 24,000 dollar question? Although we loved our accommodation and thought it was the height of comfort and luxury, the noise from the neighbours through the interconnecting door was rather irritating. However even if we were offered a detached house with no nearby neighbours at the Bay I’m not so sure we’d want to go back. The walk down to the beach and the exhausting climb back up again was an absolute killer and to be honest I’d prefer somewhere with a gentler stroll to the water’s edge and back. Don’t get me wrong, the Bay is a lovely holiday site and I highly recommend staying there, I just found the daily walk to the sea shore and back far too gruelling. You also need to factor in that it can take an age to drive anywhere as you are effectively in the back end of beyond and at the bottom of a very long and winding narrow single track road.

Highly recommended as a fantastic holiday site but with reservations due to the exhausting walk to the sea and the isolation of the site. Four stars from me.

Hi there,

Thank you for your wonderful feedback, it's always great to receive such positive comments.

The sea views from the hot tubs at numbers 42 and 43 really are brilliant, and we're really glad you enjoyed our pool as well.
42 and 43 are great for bigger groups or two separate families who like to have their own space but be close, and the interconnecting doors can make it feel like one giant house.

once again thank you for taking the time to comment and we hope to welcome you all back soon,

Kind Regards,

The Bay Talland team
