Description: Simplicity, imagination and quality of produce are key at The Royal. Head chef Francois du Toit (La Colombe, Manna Epicure) believes that food should be honest. If you say tomato it must taste like tomato, if you say fillet you should get the best our country has to offer. This philosophy together with the use of modern equipment (such as the use of Sous-Vide and Pacojet) results in creative but unpretentious dishes with "taste" as main ingredient.

We dined at the Royal Hotel at the end of a 6-week road trip, and can honestly say that it was the best meal we had during this time. We had the five course dinner, starting with grilled goat's cheese, tiger prawns were next, then kingklip, pork belly and finished off with Dutch Apple tart and homemade ice cream. This was all for the incredible price of R198 per head! The service was wonderful, with just enough time between courses. There was an interesting wine list, leaning towards the local area and we enjoyed a delicious Sauvignon blanc, Strandveld from their Elim vineyards. All-in-all, an epic dinner to end of an epic holiday.

We love the village and our stay in the B&B Shiraz Estate. The host Kristine gave us the tip to have the 5 course dinner in the Royal Restaurant. You had to reserve before 5 o clock an had a very lovely dinner

The front stoep at the Royal is still one of the best places for lunch on a summer's day in Riebeek Kasteel, but the hotel is in dire need of a rethink. The restaurant menu seems to have remained unchanged for at least a year. The food we had - a stilton and roquefort salad and goats cheese rolled in sun-dried tomatoes - were pleasant - but it was a case of deja vu and deja mange. Service was efficient but superficial, and the waiter declined to recognize us from a previous stay.

A limited dinner menu but adequately prepared and presented. If not windy then the front stoep provides villa and street views. Good for breakfast.

Booked in a few days before Christmas with my family.
Booked a king suite.
All good until Christmas Day when we went for Lunch and the hotel had 200 people for the Christmas lunch but staff and kitchen could not cope with this clearly.
It was a lot of sitting looking at empty plates in between courses.
Was so hungry I asked for a bread roll.
We had booked some platters for the evening as the hotel said that was all that was available. So later that evening we arrived down to find only 1 member of staff to run the whole hotel for the night. Including the reception- Bar - kitchen- and the rooms etc.
Well he was running from here to there.
No service for us all waiting for our pre ordered platters. So my sister had to go to the kitchen to find them and we served ourselves.
Platters had cheese and antipasti selection but only 4 crackers per platter! The poor guy who was left managed to find us 8 crackers in the kitchen.
I kid you not!!! We asked him was there any bread or anything else except 8 crackers but no nothing.
It was a dreadful experience and really took from the day we expected to have with the family.
We looked for a wimpy close by to see if they were open!!
I have to say the staff when they were there were very nice.
But please management don’t be greedy booking in hundreds or lunch when you can not cope and leave an hour or more between a course of beetroot mouse which wouldn’t fill a fly!!
Next day we wanted to sit by the pool and relax so all set and only 1 parasol for the whole pool? 37deg and one parasol we would have fried .We asked why and were told they had been chucked in the pool when they were there by guests.
The type of guests you get here are not the kind to do that.
Won’t be going back I’m afraid!!

Thank sarah s
