A last minute booking made online, gave us one of the best day and night at the Royal Hotel. The staff were friendly and attentive. The room was basic but perfect for the night. The pool was just what we needed after driving in the summer heat. Definitely order a G&T and sit on the stoep watching the world go by. Coffee delivered to your room in the morning is one of the many treats in store. Looking forward to going back.

We went to the royal hotel for lunch today. The service was very slow and not particularly friendly. Starters took 40 minutes to be served and was great. Main courses took more than an hour later and appeared on the table in drips and drabs. The lamb belly was fantastic, the fish and chips was great and the risotto absolutely terrible and totally inedible! The complaint to the manager was handled very professionally and we were offered the meal for free. We paid anyway as part of the meal was enjoyable. I would not go back there unless i had a lot of time to kill. This establishment can really pull up its socks.

The stoep, the ambiance, not to be missed. The gin and tonics are benchmark. We loved the very strong colonial resonance, the history just wells up unrequested, desired. What conversations those wall have soaked up in 150 plus years... fascinated, enchanted, we will return here.

My first visit to the Royal hotel was in the winter when the Cape winters are drizzly and cold. The large fireplace in the lounge of the Royal was just the cure. Here you can laze on one of the many comfortable sofas and stare at the crackling fire. Or you can order a drink an start chatting to fellow visitors. On Friday afternoons from 5 - 7 you can order your G&T at half price - bonus! Not sure if that is an ongoing promotion, but I returned a few months later and it was still going. The bartender serves the drink in a large goblet with exotic bits of fruit bobbing in it. Pomegranate, gooseberries, kiwi. A true delight. The hotel has been refurbished and is in excellent nick. Oozes style and charisma. In summer there is a splash pool for residents that faces the lush gardens and has, of course, a wet bar. Splash out - go there!

Room Tip: My review focussed on the drinks
