Sitting on the veranda of this elegant old timer sipping a gin definitely evoked feelings of a more leisurely era. The gin happy hour is a must and one can choose from a wide range of gins some you will never have heard of but definitely worth a try . I liked the Hope Salt River and the Wilderer particularly.
The garden rooms 1-3 are very well appointed and the bed is enormous.the pub has a nice vibe and the barman knows his stuff,
We ate out at dinner time but breakfasted in the hotel pub. Breakfast was not well prepared - it was slow and when it arrived some of it was over cooked.
The staff were very friendly and helpful although the hotel seemed a little understaffed.

Room Tip: Garden rooms are spacious and quiet.

Drove up to Riebeek-Kasteel from Cape Town for a day and a night. Destination: The Royal Hotel which is apparently the oldest hotel in SA. The drive was awash in colors of lime greens and acid yellow of the canola fields in full bloom. The hotel was a delight and a surprise. Filled with history and a very comfortable place to lay your head. Wonderful breakfast on the large veranda. It reminded me a little of Raffles in Singapore, in an African kind of way!! Interesting town. Nice diversion from Cape Town for 24 hours. Lovely shops with interesting fare.

Great weekend get away! We really enjoyed our stay this past weekend. Maxwell and his colleagues were put under a bit of pressure on Sunday morning with extra guests for breakfast, but they coped extremely well!
Enjoyed calling room service for early morning coffee or tea.
I would like to suggest they rotate the mattresses, could have done with a little more comfort but otherwise the rooms are lovely and the bathrooms are really great!
The food in the restaurant was excellent and well presented.
Will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The garden rooms are very nice. Room 5 can be a bit noisy with staff being up early in the kitchen.

Lovely warm and welcoming atmosphere . Easily the best Gin & Tonic I have ever had. Locally distilled with a fynbos flavor . Served in a huge glass with strawberries . Stunning.

The lamb shoulder was superb and something I can strongly recommend .

The staff were extremely friendly but not quite on top of the menu and what it offered.
