Elundini Backpackers is one of the two places out of hundreds we've visited in South Africa that we keep visiting again and again. It is a place filled with realistic optimism, everyday joy, and humble resilience. You'll meet people with stories and laughter. It is a place to chill, praise the nature, and reflect. It is a place to get back to basics, enjoy the mountains, sunsets and real village life. Lieve and Elliot are great fun to hang around with, and my 10 year old son thinks Elundini is THE travel destination in South Africa.

I love staying at Elundini. We were already there 2x although it is a looooong drive from Cape Town. You don't come for luxury but you come to see the real life in South Africa. Lieve does a lot of work in the community so you can visit different initiatives. You can choose to self cater but I would recommend to book your meals and enjoy them with the family. For kids it is great because all the kids from the village come to play soccer on the field in the afternoon. Last time we were there we were invited to a kiddies party and enjoyed some cake and play at one of the nearby houses. All is done in the most sustainable way possible and Lieve and Elliott are really trying to make a difference in the community. Can't recommend staying here enough and just slow down for a bit. You don't come here for luxury and wifi but for experiencing an amazing off the beaten track destination. Something completely different yet authentic and real.

Hi Jessy,

Thanks for taking your time to write this lovely review. When people come with kiddies here, it's amazing to see how quickly they all connect with the local children. Soccer is indeed a great ice breaker.
Hope you will pay us another visit soon.

Warm regards,
Lieve

Plenty of other reviews cover the lovely friendly Elundini Backpackers run by Lieve and Elliot so I will tell you about one of the mountain biking and hiking possibilities in the area. A trip I have done twice with a different group of friends each time is to start in Hogsback and ride via Michel's Pass and Seymore to Elundini Backpackers - it's mostly downhill and Michel's pass is quite exciting. Take it slowly and admire the views. Then spend the night at Elundini Backpackers, enjoying the excellent hospitality and next day hike through the charming village of Elundini and back over the mountain to Hogsback with a guide. It's best to bring your own bike but there are also bikes to hire from Elundini. You can even drop some kit at Elundini on your way to Hogsback so you only need to ride with a light backpack. There is a little shop in Seymore for refreshments along the way. Both the ride and the hike can be managed by people of average fitness but you will enjoy it all the more if you are a regular rider and hiker. Finally you collect your bike from Elundini Backpackers on the way home - and drop off your guide. It makes a great two-day trip to combine with all the other hiking and biking possibilities around Hogsback.

Hidden behind the Amatola mountains of the Eastern Cape, peacefully located along the gravel road that connect hogsback to Seymour, there is a village named Elundini. The backpacker, a family-owned budget-hostel built within the village, is a fantastic place and a great opportunity to switch your trip into a an amazing cultural experience. Lieve, Elliot, the kids and all the Elundini members host incredible vibes. I have been travelling in South Africa for 5 years and no other place are equal to Elundini. I visited this place several times and every time it was different. I strongly recommend this wonderful place! Do it the cool way: (1) take a minibus from Alice (2) kindly ask to drop you at the turn where Elundini Backpacker' sign is (3) call Lieve to pick you up. Your trip just turned, you won't regret it!!!

Room Tip: Trust Lieve and Elliot!

With a group of senior citizens of Belgium we stayed 2 nights in Elundini Backpackers. Very nice location and accommodation. Three Rondavels accommodated 16 people. The fourth Rondavel is the sanitary block (showers, toilets, and lavabo's).
Meals, also vegetarian, are cooked on requested in the guesthouse livingroom. The honesty bar works great. Don't forget to bring your own towels.
Sustainability is important in this Backpack : hot water provided by a 'donkey'-system, dry toilets, portable solarlamps in the Rondavels.
We did some activities suitable for senior people : Xhosa language lessons, yes with the clicks, Xhosa bread baking and collecting firewood, a guided town walk.

Room Tip: all rondavels and the diningroom have a spectacular view on the Amathole Mountains . Great view of starspangled heaven (if no full moon...)
