Looking at all the previous reviews on TA, there’s no doubt we just picked the wrong time to go as I don’t think the owners were home.

We were curtly greeted upon arrival and hastily shown to our room. We received no information at all with regards the facilities or the town. When we asked about walks in the area, we were told to do 39 Steps and when we advised him we’d done that he said, well that’s the best.

At 7:30 the next morning I sent a message to the number provided on their sign board asking if they’re open for breakfast - I’m still waiting for a reply. When I phoned just after 8, I was told we should have booked the previous day - we were not told this on arrival. I asked if we could have dinner and told definitely not because he’s going to the shops. That was the end of asking.

The room is a bit dated but clean. There is a little fridge, microwave, kettle, mugs, tea & coffee etc. Plates and utensils are kept on the floor in a basket. There is no dustbin. There is a small hairdryer but nowhere to sit to dry your hair, you have to kneel on the floor on the hard carpet. It was cold when we were there & there was no offer to help light the fire.

The gardens look beautiful and for us, we love furry friends - at least they tried to make us feel a bit welcome.

Sadly, I will choose elsewhere next time.

Traveling as two couples we spent three nights in the rustic self catering family cottage at Nutwoods Park. This self catering option has two bedrooms but can accommodate six people.Barbecue facilities are available and the surrounding gardens are immaculate. There is no TV in the cottage which is worth bearing in mind. Overall it is adequate for a stay of a few days but is not overly good value for money. I understand that the property has been sold which may account for the lack of attention to detail and maintenance.
On one evening we enjoyed a fine dining experience prepared by Atila which was excellent but pricey at R395.00 pp on a BYO basis. Breakfasts are also available at R145.00 pp.

This is a great little gem! We enjoyed our stay in the Egyptian room immensely! Neil and Atilla are the best, and we will certainly return there when we get the chance! Do not expect TV or WIFI, though. This suited our purpose because we were in Hogsback to enjoy nature and the activities.

Hi Tanya, You are really very kind, glad you enjoyed your stay and it was our pleasure to have you with us. There is actually wifi but it works from the main hall and dining room. . No TV done on purpose to give the guests an experience of real peace!! Next time a fine dining experience as well??? Atila is top drawer!!
Hope to see you again.
Neil.

Hogsback was a delightful surprise.  Set in beautiful grounds, the English manor house atmosphere provides an oasis.  Our hosts were very welcoming and we enjoyed hearing their stories.  And the food - dinner was one of the best meals we've had anywhere!  The chef is as talented and creative as you'll find in any food capital.  I was sorry we only had one night there, but I'd go back  and spend more time if we're ever in South Africa again.

Our stay was simply wonderful.
When we arrived we weren't so sure. We were the only guests in a massive house in the middle of nowhere.
But soon it transpired that that was a blessing! The hosts were absolutely amazing and we shared many chats and stories. We got on really well and by the end it felt like we were saying goodbye to old friends.
The rooms were big, quirky (full of antiques) and very clean.
AND THE FOOD!! Incredible! The one tip I give you is - skip lunch and be really really hungry; you'll need an appetite to get through all the courses.
Thanks so much guys!
