Really enjoyed our stay here! Very very quiet ... about 2 minutes walk from the path going around two crater lakes, rich in colors and countryside ambiance.

Maria helped make our reservations, which was a huge and immaculately clean room, with a nice firm king sized bed and two chairs that pulled out into singles for the boys. She also made reservations at a local agriturismo for dinner (villa della rossa - wonderful!!), horseback riding and a wine tasting! Everything you could want in a weekend away in wine country!

And the Aglianco del Vulture wine is to die for!! Get a tasting at Cantine del Notaio, which has a wonderful atmosphere and fantastic cellars!

Just 2 hours away from napoli, you'll never feel more at-home !

Be sure to visit Melfi & Venosa and the chestnut festival if its on!

We enjoyed a lot our stay at Villa Maria because we could combine relax and discovery of Basilicata. The hotel is elegant but also familiar, with a big swimming pool surrounded by nature, a restaurant that proposes nice food and a good selection of local wines. Our room was very big and tidy. We stayed there 4 days thinking to just lie in the swimming pool and walk around the lakes (which are very closeby, surrounded by the wonderful San Michele Abbey) but in the end we must admit we regret not to have programmed a longer trip: the owner are very helpful and proactive in proposing tours and activities!
We suggest a visit to Aglianico wine producers, in particular Cantine del Notaio in Rionero, that consist in a system of wine cellars dug in the rocks underlying the whole town (ask a guided visit, the cellars' owner will tell you the story of the city). We also discovered the other locations in the surroundings of Monticchio, such as Venosa, Melfi and Matera. It is not easy to reach the top of the volcano, but it's worth the effort!
