Iznajar village is small and beautiful, surrounded by stunning scenery. The castle dates back to the 7th century and has a definitive Moorish feel. The Moorish word Iznajar means 'happy town' and that's how it makes you feel :)

I thought that the comment made by MissSniggins was poor. How can anyone say that the Moorish castle dating back to 8th century is nothing special ? It has survived the Christian invasion, world war, civil war..... it has been there for over 1200 years. I think it is very special however small it is !

How do you review and rate a visit to an 8th century castle? I think that is extremely difficult and a bit unfair. There is no way we should be comparing this little castle on top of a rocky outcrop overlooking the stunning Lake Iznajar with the world famous Mezquita in Cordoba or Alhambra in Granada but there is something about the Iznajar Castle that stimulates my senses.

I have in my life visited many historical sites all over the world but when you feel the history with your body and mind imagining how this little castle underwent changes in all aspects over the centuries, it really gives me an opportunity to think deeply about our lives and the world.

The most interesting part of the castle is the Aljibe - the well, in the middle the castle. Thousand years ago, there was of course no tap to run the water but the sophisticated communise designed the system in order to collect the rain water which ran through the holes made in the ground then fell into the underground pool.

The town council is slowly improving the castle, although under the current government, the funding in the tourism is getting more scarce but they have made a great promotional video about the history of the castle (in Spanish), and a twice daily guided tour is offered by an English speaking local staff and they also offer a various events in the castle ground such as Moorish Medieval Market, Guitar concerts (both held in May 2012) and last year there was even a classical piano concert where 2 Japanese pianists played under the full moon in July.
It is true to say that there should be more information in English for non-Spanish speaking tourists but as said above, you can join in a guided tour in English to understand the general history of the place.

Give Iznajar castle a chance if you are in the area !
