We stayed at Fordoun for only one night in transit from the Battlefields to Durban, and were really not expecting much. However, we were very pleasantly surprised by the hotel, its grounds and, particularly, by its food.

Well, I should start by admitting that we were upgraded to one of their detached superior suites, which was stunningly palatial - although we got a glimpse of other rooms and they looked very nice too!

After settling in, a satisfying salad lunch and a short walk around the grounds, we had a treatment each in the spa. My husband was pleased with his massage, although my pedicure was delivered by a morose and silent individual and was a depressing experience - and the first pedicure I've ever had where I was laid flat... . On our short tour of the spa I gained the impression that the pool and floatation area were rather worn and not as clean as they might be.

Dinner was very good indeed. Having chosen from an interesting wine list, we had a glass while relaxing in one of the two comfortable sitting rooms, then moved into the well-lit and stylish dining room. After the most tender herb and pecan crusted kudu fillet and some good lamb cutlets, we indulged in local ice cream and a decadent 'death by chocolate' tart. Excellent cooking, friendly and efficient service and a chat with one of the family of owners checking that we were satisfied, added up to a super evening.

Recommended.

Dear Claranda

Thank you for your feedback it is greatly appreciated I am glad you were pleasantly surprised although not sure why you were not expecting much!

We shall continuously endeavour to make sure we keep on delivering on the guest experience. Fordoun has been a family business for long time and we take our guests contributions very seriously. I am disappointed that the Spa did not deliver and will investigate into your comments.

Have a great end to the year.

Kind regards

Richard Bates

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay.
The staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful.
Reception offered a warm welcome.
Rooms were comfortable, spacious and clean.
Room service was excellent.
Meals were delicious with friendly staff all round.
The spa treatments were unbelievable (special emphasis on Andile's massages).
The staff at the spa were all unbelievablly friendly and warm. The environment was calm and relaxing, and exactly what we needed.
We maximized usage of the flotation pool, which was very relaxing, as well as the heated indoor pool.

What a lovely weekend!!!!!

Putting it mildly, I am annoyingly critical! Fordoun Spa and hotel met all our expectations if not more. Wonderful room with superb appointments and view, excellent low key service, wonderful attentive restaurant staff. What more can one want?
Go on. Go spoil yourself! Or should I say go and get spoiled! You are worth it!

We spent 2 nights at Fordoun and it combined everything we wanted. We did both the hikes, which are thoroughly enjoyable, enjoyed the food and the spa facilities. The flotation pool is quite an experience. Staff from the owner down are all attentive and thoughtful. The room was comfortable, spacious and well appointed.

Always a pleasure going there. Lives up to its 5 star reputation. We booked two rooms and had a beautiful stay. Staff are super friendly and the food is great. But it's the location that is really beautiful. Surrounded by open fields and a dam, walking or cycling around the property was so much fun. The property is a refurbished dairy and has some serious history.
Owners are hands on and are always available for a quick chat. In the winter months, the fireplace in the room is such a nice touch.
