We were delighted to find out that this restaurant at Hotel Aberseehof was so close to the exceptionally wonderful Pension Schlommer were we were staying for a week. The Pension recommended it so we did not have to drive back to town and the Pension does not offer dinner service. Convenience was this restaurant's strongest feature There is only a 3 minute walk between the two.

The service was good and the food pretty good too. Nicest was the patio where we dined that had nice views. The menu offered a reasonably broad range of options. Seemed a little pricey for the level of cuisine though.

Found the place to be very average on choice of food. If you reach here 3-4 days consecutive, like us, as we were staying at a Pension nearby, you will very soon run out of choices. And specifically found a attender (for one day he had served us) to be quite rude. He expects people to decide in 2-3 minutes on what to order and that is a challenge when we were there with a child who takes time to decide. He said "I have others to attend to" and this in a pretty rude way. Well, we didn't eat him to stand around us as well...btw, by then, our drinks were already ordered and it wasn't that we were just warming the seats. But saying on the brighter side, the location is nice (that is applicable for any property in this place as St Gilgen is extremely picturesque) and the restaurant is well decorated as well. Other days, the lady and an elderly man, we found to be quite welcoming. Now, this is very important isn't it, being in a service industry? Given a second choice, I will not go here more than once.

Since the guest house we stayed in did not offer half-board, we were dining this hotel throughout our stay in Abersee.

The restaurant offers a decent choice of meals including "summer specialties" and the personnel is friendly and helpful. Good choice of ice-cream and other deserts.

- their "espresso" is (as usual in many Austrian venues) more of a "small black coffee", no creme and without strong taste
- the selection of fish could have been better
- focus on steaks and potatoes / chips, no speztle, no goulash...

Tip: Once a week they have "homely evening" with local music and dancing show in traditional dresses. Definitely worth seeing.

Veggie choice: Very good (by UK standards) / Excellent (by Austrian standards)

There seem to be 3 main vegetarian courses regularly on the menu; sometimes a daily special is also vegetarian.

As we stayed for 3 nights at this hotel (on a hiking holiday without a car), we were happy that this hotel offers vegetarian, tasty dishes. Especially, as the other local choices for eateries are a bit limited, if one needs to walk in the dark (a lot of streets do not have any street lights - it's this rural around here). All main courses we had were very delicious, but the "Gemueselaibchen" (veggie burgers) on a great bed of salad was the best dish. The fried courgettes were nice, but there was no side dish, and with having been on long journey that day, I wish that I could have had some carbohydrates (if I would go there again, I would just ask, and I'm sure that they would oblige, because of one desert experience: see below).

Whereas the main vegetarian courses are more modern cuisine, the deserts are far more traditional (various ice cream creations, primarily from the national equivalent of Wall's, named "Eskimo"), and mostly Austrian ("Pallatschinke" = pan cake; "Kaiserschmarn" = a thicker pancake, but cut up). As I'm currently not supposed to eat any cacao, I asked whether I could have the "Pallatschinke" without the standard chocolate sauce. To compensate for the lack of sauce, the kitchen added slightly-sugared almonds, and a couple of bits of fresh fruit (not normally served with this dish).

The service in traditional dress ("Dirndel") was prompt, friendly and good - without being overattentive. We can only recommend this restaurant.
