Tranquillity itself. Perfect holiday cottage with the horses for company. This cottage is fully equipped with everything you could need. Francisco and Clara could not do more for us, having fresh bread delivered every day for breakfast was excellent.
We had the perfect holiday when we stayed at Haybarn Cottage, a house that was our home for the two glorious weeks we spent in Madeira. The owner, Francisco, and staff were very attentive and helpful and they did all they could to make our stay as comfortable and wonderful as possible. The cottage itself has been lovingly decorated with all the amenities you would expect. It was, for us, a place we looked forward to returning to after a busy day exploring the island. In fact, we didn't want to leave! My husband enjoyed a wonderful horse-riding lesson while we were there and our daughter, who was almost one at the time, enjoyed looking at the horses, sheep and chickens, as well as exploring the well-kept garden. The island itself is amazing - a great place to explore with a small child.
We really enjoyed staying in Haybarn Cottage. The cottage is perfect for a couple (also with one child) - there is a cosy ground level with a sittng area, fireplace and an open kitchen with everything you need. Wooden stairs lead to the bedroom and a big bathroom. You can see that the furniture and every detail has been chosen with love. You can feel the Madeiran tradition.
It is the perfect place for all who love peace, quiet and being woken up by natural sounds like a rooster or sheep (which we loved!). It is near Funchal but still enough far away to have the feeling of being in the countryside, almost 900m high up.
Francisco and his wife are people who take it very seriously to offer good service and are very happy if their guests are having a good time.
We even got a birthday cake, so thank you again for that, Francisco!
The house and the garden of Haybarn Cottage is really neat and its a peacefull place.
Unfortunately it got very noisy and annoying at night when the rats at the attic floor straight over the bedroom began their drive. We couldn't sleep because of that noise all night long.
The owner of the cottage has a different viewpoint of hospitality! At a first conversation he asked misplaced, private and very intimate questions !!! Really a NO GO!
When we left the cottage we were told, that we have to pay for each little basket of firewood 10 €. We were told usually it costs 30 €. We never got informed about those costs and its written nowhere. Thats a big fail! And at the beginning the owner said we could use as much as we want because we should feel comfortable.... and at the end you have to pay for it.
From the moment we stepped off the plane our host, Francisco, made us feel incredibly welcome on Madeira. He phoned to welcome us and give directions to the cottage, where he was waiting in order to greet us and show us the house. We woke up the following morning to a magical landscape. The cottage is on Francisco's private estate which he has transformed into a stunning terraced garden surrounded by eucalyptus trees, high above the sea. The cottage is immaculate and spotlessly clean with a wood burning stove and well-equipped kitchen. We ate vegetables from the garden and lemons from a tree in the cottage garden. Francisco is a kind, generous and charming host who is keen to help guests discover Madeira and learn about the history of the island. We look forward to another break from Britain's grey skies next year.
