“A Little Gem”
Review of Montana Cuervo

Montana Cuervo
Reviewed 6 October 2017 via mobile

Easy to get to with good off road parking and clearly defined footpath. The whole walk is about 4km if you take in the walk to the bottom of the dormant volcano. We found it very educational and worthwhile, although it looks like the authorities have recently stopped people climbing to the top it didn't detract from our visit.
Take plenty of water and a hat when you go.
As the title says this is a little gem and shouldn't be missed.

We arived by hire car from Playa Blanca which was a nice 30 minute drive .We got there at 10.30am and traffic was queuing to get in which was a bit chaotic as the road to the visitor centre is one way traffic. Then you drive to the visitor centre where you board a bus to be taken to the volcanos and laver field ,the laver field is amazing and other wordly and you are given a recorded commentary in your own language. The bus tour takes around 1/2 an hour and is worth every penny of the 9 euros charged. After the tour you can go to the visitor centre where there is a resturant and displays showing how hot the laver layer is. In summary well worth a visit.

The Montana Cuervo I did was a walk around the base, including entrance into the volcano.

To get there go from LZ2 to LZ30 and then LZ 56 road, it is easy to park. The path from the car park is well marked and there are a number of signage points with description of the volcano and landscape. The lava landscape is so superb to observe. When you approach the volcano there is a circular path around the base. If you choose to go anti clockwise you soon arrive at the path down into the volcano, this is such a fantastic view, a must. Why go early? Well we were in there by ourselves for a few minutes, which is nice and reflective (there were obviously other small groups of people around the same time), later when we got back to the car park a very large bus party arrived. That would have been less reflective!!! We had started before 10am!!

The path around the base is easy to follow, do suggest shoes and not flip flops as you are walking on shale albeit reasonably flat surface most of the way (my wife has two artificial knees but she had no problems walking it). Some great views again of both the lava flow, the distant volcanoes and the plant life. Well worth a visit. It is just under 20 miles from Playa Blanca should you be staying there.

Really a great walk around the rim of the Vulcano. We spend 2,5hrs walking the 10km from the parking lot around the top and back again. So beautiful and very unspoiled since no signs, fences etc. Is anywhere to be found on the trail.
