Review of Mpila Camp
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 09 Dec 2019
The quality of the camp has improved since our last visit. The electricity seemed to be on for longer at night/early morning and the safari tents were generally better. (The tents were able to be closed properly to prevent access by the ever-present monkeys!). It's a great place to stay (although a little expensive when recognising the limited facilities available, but nevertheless its is recommended as a place to stay in the "bush".

Tented camp was clean and tidy, but some basic maintenance was needed to take it to the next level. Game drives were great, but again basic maintenance let it down eg old and illegible signage, roads closed with no warning, roads near the camp needed grading.

The cottages are basic, but have everything you need. Great braai facilities (just watch out for the hyaena's). There is a curio shop which stocks drinks and snacks, as well as some great curios. We also did a night drive which was fantastic, our guide was informative and friendly.

We stayed in a two bedroom cabin at Mpila Camp for two nights! The cabin was nice, spacious and clean!
Bring your own food and water since the on site store did not have a great selection!
Be sure to follow all the safety rules of the camp!
For younger children there is a playground on site!

We have visited the Imfolozi Game Reserve on several occasions and the secret to a great experience is to stay at the Mpila Tented Camp.

We have seen the Big 5 on three of the winter visits, and in summer the lush green bush recently made up for the missing leopard sighting.

At Mpila don't expect the swish designer "African Safari" tented camp. It is down to earth with each tent in a secluded setting in the bush under flat crown trees.
Impala, warthog and monkeys roam around and hyaena can be seen at night.
All the amenities for self catering are perfect and comfortable.

When the gates open we are out for game viewing, and prepared with our picnic or skottelbraai brunch at one of the picnic spots.

This is our favorite bush getaway and our friends, visitors and referrals have never been disappointed.
Though sadly on our most recent visit in November my tog bag was pilfered and my wallet was stolen at the camp.

Everyone needs to do this once, it's invigorating, breathtaking and exciting.
The tents are hardly "tents" I was amazed by how nice the accommodation was. Just sitting out with a glass of wine in the evening and listening to the sounds was something I will never forget.
Staff are a bit short though and it didn't feel very warm. Mind you though they might be jaded by the "big 5" tourists who seem to hurtle round at 80km/h and wonder why they don't see anything! If you just want to see a Lion go to the zoo.
