Things have changed...

Review of Phumula Lodge
2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 25 Sept 2016
Oh my dear Pepe and lee..how things have changed. We used to use Phumula alot but sadly things are not as they used to be. There are no catering facilities so we were advised to eat from the restaurant. The food was average and cold. We ate takeway later in the rooms because we had no choice. The bar was empty and nobdy there. The included breakfast was not good too.
The facilities are lacking a professional eye and iam doubtful we will stop here again.

I am a regular client of Phumula Lodge. If you had asked me about this lodge 3 months ago i would have referred it without hesitation,Pepi & Lee were the managers at this time and were accommodating in all aspects at any hour, they were friendly, helpful & efficient with any needs that I had. However, during my last stay there, I called in for the booking as i always do, I asked to speak to Lee and was told that she was not there that day, to my disappointment when i arrived I was then told that Pepi & Lee no longer worked there. I could see the change in the welcoming atmosphere immediately & the normal TLC they provided was lacking. Without Pepi & Lee there I noticed that there were things that had gone backwards, the towels were damp, there was no remote for the air con, no toilet paper, no drinking water was provided, overall the rooms were not up to standard. I now hesitate to recommend this Lodge nor would I stay there again. I think that without capable management this lodge wont be restored to its former glory...

Avoid this place at all costs. Our encounter with management was more than memorable as they were rude and unfriendly. The site is near a busy road and building site. There are simply way better and tranquil places to stay.
The rooms are dusty and dirty
Its a 1 star at a push and a shove, highly un- recommended !

DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID, GO SPEND YOUR CASH SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!

We do not recall having any unhappy guests and our lodge is closed off from the busy road by trees and vegetation. We have also recently past a 4 star grading and we take pride in cleanliness. please feel free to contact me personally if you had any displeasure as I would help in any way possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Our rooms were given to someone else after confirming all details several times. No compensation was offered. The owner was very unfriendly and never apologised once. The rooms we were moved to had no towels or toilet paper. We will never ever recommend or return.

After spending 3 days confirming the details of our booking directly with the owner, we arrived at the lodge to only be told abruptly and rudely that the chalets that were to overlook the dam which we had booked and confirmed were given to a guest who extended their stay and that we were now in the main reception house - NOT what we booked and confirmed! This was the main reception on NOT private as we requested. We were looking for a reclusive weekend getaway and specifically asked for private lodges near the water and made sure all the finer details were confirmed with the owner prior to us arriving. The owner had no apology and shouted at us over the phone and said if we were not happy we were to leave. We do we go now after driving 250km on treacherous road at night as we had arrived 7:30pm in a rural area ?? The owner was incredibly rude and feisty and made no apology for her mistake and continued to argue with us. We had no choice but to stay the night and pay for what we we did not book. To make matters worse, there were no bath towels in the one room and we had to take from the other room and use a hand towel as not enough towels. We were absolutely shocked at the lack of hospitality skills displayed by the elderly female owner. She never once apologized nor offered a compromise. She was rude and unfriendly. The co owner, her son never called us back as he said he would and we waited a week for him to do so, clearly guest service is not their priority. We travel frequently and were horrified at the lack of responsibility and people skills!. The owners are absolutely clueless as to how important it is to honor bookings and follow through on promises. We will never ever return, nor recommend this place ever! Do not go there!

All our rooms have a deck that overlooks the dam. The main reception is not attached to any room and is a reception area on it's own. We had tried to appolagise for any inconvenience but you as well as your partner were very rude to the point where the security had to be called in for assistance. As for the bath towels, a check list is done to see that everything is in place and in order and your room had all the necessities and no complaint by you or your partner was lodged in this regard and we have a fully stocked laundry room with extras for emergencies or if guests require extra towels. The co-owner did contact you but trying to communicate with you was very difficult as you just shout and have no communication skills whatsoever and just shouted threats. You paid for one evening yet overstayed way past the check out time and had a cooler box full of alcohol which you consumed at our fully stocked bar area even when asked to leave. Only after once again calling security did you and your partner leave the premises. We would be glad not to accommodate you in future as i have never encountered guests like you in my life and i have been in the industry for over 40 years.

The bar is never open and you arent allowed to bring your own alcohol. if you want a drink you have to call the receptionist and she will walk to the bar to get it for you. By the time you get your drinks, you better order the next one. The venue is very close to a busy road and construction site and this is in contrast to the peaceful looking photos. The lodge is well built and well kept but there is no atmosphere and in an entire day of fishing we had not one bite although we saw plenty of small (under 1 kg) bass hiding in the reeds....

We have a fully functional bar with a bar lady and is available on request. There was a mall being built close by and has since been completed.
As for the fishing we have many anglers catch many bass as well as talapia, barble, eel and grass kob. Unfortunately we can not control how fish bite. However if you were targeting bass maybe in the future try changing lures and different jigging techniques as the South African bass record was caught in this dam and was released and many bass over five kilo have been caught and released.
