“Visit this fasinating Roman battlefield from 235AD in the middle of Germany!”

Roemerschlacht am Harzhorn
Reviewed 14 August 2017

Knew about this battle from visiting the exhibition in Braunschweig landesmuseum a few years ago. So off we went down the route 7 visit the battlefield live. Top tip, come off at the Seesen exit and head south on the B248 towards Northeim. You can't miss the site, its signposted and visible about 10km roughly from the motorway.

Parking is free and accessible to all including families with buggy's or visitors with wheelchairs. Has a small visitors centre with toilets and a few Roman/Germanic exhibits. Staff really friendly and on side, coffee and biscuits available for a small donation. The info boards are in German and English and very informative. Dogs also welcome but on leads.

The battlefield walk is very well planned but unfortunately not good going for wheel chair users, their is a small incline heading westwards which is cheeky if your are not slightly fit. Sturdy footwear is strongly advisable depending on the weather. The battlefield can be visited as part of a guided tour which is strongly advisable ( start at 1000,1200 and 1400) however you can visit on your own and read the informative information boards in English and German. The complete walk along the old battlefield and back is 1.8km long or just over a mile for those with Angle Saxon decent.

Flyers available in German, English and French. Activities also available for kids. A must for history fans but not too clever if your taking a partner on a date. Enjoy, we did.

Opening times information centre end of March until October 1100 until 1600
