If you are expecting a five star country house hotel then you will be disappointed.

This is a beautiful nineteenth century party "castle" which somehow got through communism with 99% of the exterior and 90% of the ground floor interiors unscathed.
Since then, three star bathrooms have been installed upstairs, and the bedrooms furnished with furniture off the cheap end of Alibaba.

Having looked at the economics of a similar building, I can see why they offer only breakfast, and why reception closes at 18:00.
But that does mean that guests can roam the building.

I expect it would be a bad idea to stay on a Saturday when there is likely to be a wedding taking over the ground floor and making noise until late (although maybe that is less of a problem in Germany?)

So, why would one stay?
Well, just as a BYO restaurant enables one to drink much better wine than one could otherwise afford in a restaurant, here (especially during the summer) bringing a picnic enables one to eat it in the grandeur of the terrace (and probably inside would be possible too) for much less than one would pay in a place that was offering restaurant service.
I could see this working especially well for a group of friends.

Beyond the lawns, the park is neglected (possibly owned by the local council), but there are some amazing trees hidden within it.

The hotel needs renovating and proper management. We stayed there for 2 nights. It shows that no one really manages the property. Plants on the terrace were dead, tables were dirty and area around the castle just not tidy. They do not even have real candles in the hall but led-light ones. WI-FI DOES NOT WORK! Our bedroom 20 shared the window with the room next door which had a balcony on which other guests were smoking cigarettes which we could smell in the room (it was a very hot weekend so we decided to sleep with windows open). Breakfast was just AWFUL and not worth 8.50 euros - where did this price come from???. We arrived at 9.20am and there was hardly any food or any member of staff. I finally found lady who kindly said she will cut some extra tomatoes and ham. Eggs were cold and so was the water for the tea! Cleaning staff was very noisy hovering the area outside our room at early hours on Saturday. I will not recommend this place to anyone, it is expensive for what it is and it look they make money from offering function rooms for wedding parties.

Room tip: Doubt there are any 'good rooms'

We didn't set out looking for a country schloss to stay in - we were looking for somewhere affordable for a night near the coast (And the hotels on the Baltic are very pricey). We ended up with something like Downton Abbey.

The building is fantastic - gorgeous country house sat in its own grounds. It's not the Ritz - but it has real charm and charachter. Huge entranceway - sweeping stairways etc etc. Ther lawn faces towards sunset and there is an iddylic small lake to sit beside at the other side of some trees. Blissful.

The room is relativeley basic but perfectly functional and comfortable. Our only quibble was the wifi was awfull in the room - but sitting downstairs in the lobby is no great problem.

Breakfast was nice the dining room is very plush indeed.

We adored this place - wandering around the lawn - sipping coffee watching the sunset in front of the Hotel. OK its a bit isolated, has charachter as opposed to luxury (But its perfectly comfortable !) but its gorgeous !

This was a pleasant stay. Breakfast was good and the dinner buffet was even better. Rooms was ok, but Wi-Fi was only avabile in the lobby.
The hotel has some bikes to lend, so we had a nice ride on the contryside.

We spent 3 nights at this lovely hotel. My only negative remark is that the breakfast buffet was left in almost darkness. A bit of light would be nice ,as people my age and up tend to need more light to see things. The staff was friendly and helpfull.
The room was fine and clean, but a small mini fridge would have been nice.
We were there in April and the trees are still bare, but we can imagine it must be lovely in May and around summer. There was a lively birdlife ,but otherwise very quiet.
You need a car to get to the place and to get around in the area.
We can recommend to see the old Nazi rocket place at Pennemunde and to go and se the area of Usedorn. Greifswald is also worth a visit.
I can imagine that it would be nice to have a wedding here or a big birthday.
Regards Maja and Torben Dart
