Mrs Tweddle our hostess couldn't have been friendlier and kinder. She and her Husband manage the cottage and their working farm and so they are very busy. Not so busy however that they can't pass the time of day, tell you about the history of the farm and the area and offer ideas on places to visit and how to get there.
The farm is quite remote and a more suitable vehicle for the access road between Black Middens and the Reservoir would have helped but we managed. The peace and stillness was great. dark skies are amazing and you literally cannot see your hand in front of your face at night. We were lucky enough to have several clear nights and saw amazing starry nights which we will never forget. We had a good sleep every night in the comfortable double bed in the main bedroom. There is plenty of kindling, coal and logs to keep the two fires going, one of which is needed to heat the water. I would suggest taking supplies if you are going for more than a few days and intend to self cater as the nearest store for provisions is in Bellingham, 5 miles away. Also fill your fuel tank before you get to Keilder as the prices are hiked up. We managed nicely with the wifi but you needed to locate yourself in the right corner of the cottage to be able to connect. All in all I would describe our week as a typical farm stay and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wonderful location if you want total peace and quiet. Fantastic for getting away from absolutely everything. Go, and love it for what it is - a place where you are not quite sure if you are still in England or perhaps in a parallel universe where there are no roads, no houses in view, no sound except sheep and swallows, and open countryside to walk for miles and miles in. The decor has not been updated for perhaps 40 or 50 years, ie, expect flowery wallpaper, swirly carpets, peeling paint, knobs falling off cupboard doors, etc, and love it!!! WiFi was not available as we couldn't get any signal, but that didn't impact on our stay in the slightest; if you need it it is available free at the Rocky Road cafe in the local town of Bellingham, or at the cafe at the Boe Rigg campsite. You will need an O/S map to find the house in the first place, and for exploring.
