“Well-equipped gite in a lovely part of France”

Our experience with this property was first class from beginning to end. The owner responded promptly to our initial enquiry and to follow-up queries, provided detailed driving instructions and was on site to meet us. The gite was exactly as described in text and photos, even down to the lit wood burner which added a touch of luxury to what was a slightly chilly arrival evening.
The part of the garden for guests is fenced in and not overlooked from the main house; quite safe and secure for small children. There is a garden table and chairs and also a pair of sun loungers. We didn't use the barbecue as the evenings were still a bit chilly, but the kitchen is well-equipped, with a full-sized oven (many gites we looked at before booking only had a hob and microwave). There was plenty of crockery and glasses and everything was really clean.
Finally, a special thanks to Jane - we had a problem with our car while at the gite and she was extremely helpful with translating and even took me to the supermarket!

“So good I am reluctant to write a review as we want to keep it to ourselves!”
Reviewed 18 January 2015 for a stay in December 2014

After our plans for December changed we decided quite last minute to go away over Christmas and New Year. After having a look at options we decided that northern France was just what we needed, a peaceful environment not to far away, easily in reach by car to avoid the stresses of airports, and with good food. We came across La Teillais and were immediately attracted to the place as it looked so cosy and inviting. We looked at quite a few placed but decided to book this one. As we were going for 2 weeks we wanted to make sure it was going to be nice as there is nothing worse than arriving (especially if it's for several weeks) only to find it isn't quite like the photos!

Well, to our delight it was EXACTLY as per the photos! Upon arrival the warm and hospitable owner already had the log burner in full swing and rather than spending ages talking us through everything or laying down the rules of what/what not to do, she simply handed us the keys and told us she was going to leave us in peace, and that should we need anything or have any questions to just let her know. This allowed us to settle in and relax. After a long and hard year we did just that, within 30mins we had unpacked, were sprawled out on the sofa's, and had opened a bottle of bubbly!

I used to live in Portugal and I know that sometimes on the continent you can get places that smell musty or damp but this place wasn't at all, it was warm, dry and spotlessly clean. The owner is very clean and obviously spends time ensuring that the place is kept clean and warm. She is a delightful lady with a warm and friendly personality and she made it clear that while we were there one of her priorities was our privacy so she would not come knocking etc unless we needed something. We really did feel that it was private but it was nice knowing that if we needed something all we had to do was head down to her place and knock on the door. She had so thoughtfully put up decorations for us and we felt really welcomed from the outset.

The owner's house is adjoining however it feels much more like a detached gite as there are several rooms and very thick walls between her house and the gite, so it is very private indeed, and I can assure you of this after having 2 weeks there! The owner invited us to several meals and we ended up having a great time with her friends such that we invited ourselves along to a few events with them all!

Although the property sits just off a road, it is a b-road and get's little to no traffic coming through. The owner has a dog and 2 cats but even though we love animals she is a considerate owner and her dog is very calm. She ensures that the dog and cats are kept away, and just in case you are wondering they aren't ever in the gite so no doggy smells!

We had been a little concerned about places being shut over the festive season but when we went into Chateaubriant on Christmas Eve a market was in full swing and all the shops were open until mid afternoon. There were excellent butchers and fishmongers at the market not to mention vegetables, eggs, honey and other local delicacies. There are some good cafe's, bakers and cake shops as well, plus in town a Carrefour and just outside an Intermarche and other supermarkets in a retail park. Without fail every single person we met locally was warm, friendly and welcoming. I speak a few words in French but I always try to make an effort not to speak English, but the locals bent over backwards to help us and they liked the fact that we were trying at least to speak French! This is a mainly agricultural region but family values are important here and you can see the people have a lot of warmth and love, this place is very special indeed.

Chateaubriant is literally a few kilometres down the road and as the road is pretty straight all the way you can reach the town within 10mins, maybe less. We also found a great bakery in the next village along, the opposite direction to Chateaubriant and only about half a kilometre so for day to day croissants or bread you can get what you need there. Rennes is not that far up the road with an amazing history and great market place. Nantes is about the same distance the other way (South), and St Nazaire is also not far down the road (West). We went to both Rennes and St Nazaire on day trips and had a great time.

The gite is also near some woods so you can get out for some lovely walks without even driving anywhere. The roads are so quiet that when you walk along all is still and silent. This is great as nature comes alive, in the daytime you can hear all the birds and in the evening you hear owls cooing to each other. There is no light pollution either so at night the stars are amazingly clear and bright.

So, the gite itself as mentioned is exactly as per the photos, with a huge open room downstairs that is cosy and inviting. If the weather was hot it would be fabulous too, but in the cold conditions when we were there, with the log burner on you really do feel special. There is a main/master bedroom upstairs which is open plan and the bathroom is accessed from here. There is a separate door into another bedroom which is large, but we didn't use this as it was just two of us.

It is a perfect setting for couples or families, and the owner has a partition that can be put up if you did share the place as friends so that if the bathroom is accessed in the night by someone in the second bedroom, the main bedroom still feels private.

I will be honest I am 6ft 3in and there is a beam in the master bedroom I had to be careful with as it is just low enough to catch my head on. Due to the angle of the roof the bathroom is long and narrow but this posed no issues for us.

As per our title I feel reluctant giving this review as I want to keep this place all to ourselves, but the owner is so lovely and the place is just so good that I must do it justice. We arrived as strangers and left feeling like family. We will definitely be back and I do hope this is a useful review to others. We want to return in the spring/summer as well as I bet it is equally amazing but if you do want to visit in the colder months do not be put off at all as this place is fantastic. We fell in love with the place and the region and we have come home feeling rested and re-calibrated. Often when you go on holiday although you enjoy yourselves on the day you leave you are looking forward to going home. We didn't! We could have stayed another few weeks!

“Absolutely fabulous property”
Reviewed 31 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

The cottage was fabulous, well equipped and lovely gardens. The owner has thought of everything to make this property so comfortable for our 2 week stay. It is in an Ideal location as only an hour from Towns such as Nantes, Rennes, Anger and and St Nazaire. Nearby lakes in Pounce are great for beautiful walks or sunbathing on the beach. Chateaubriant has a great Chateaux which is well worth a look. The town has all the shops you need without travelling any further afield and the market is great for purchasing local produce. Angers has a great Chateaux and old town with Cathedral. The town has a great selection of shops also. We had relaxing days in the garden which is fully enclosed therefore ideal for children. Overall this was a fabulous property in a great location and the English owner has a wealth of knowledge on the area which was so useful. Fantastic holiday :-)
