Decent check-in, albeit we were asked in advance if we needed anything - I listed 3 things. 1. Firm pillow 2. Extra large dressing gown 3. Place to park and charge my e-bikes. Arrived and mentioned e-bikes, panic from the front desk. Went to the room, no firm pillow no extra large dressing gown! Not a good start.

Went to use the spa/pool facilities despite no towels in the room for that purpose. Then discovered that once in the pool area, use of the sauna required a towel All the pool area signage was in French only!

Back to the room (3rd floor) from 23° outside (peak of the day) to around 28° in the room at 7pm. Called reception, sorry nothing we can do!

Went for dinner, this is where I got really upset. We just wanted something light (chicken and salad, ham and salad etc.) We had to pay full buffet prices of CHF44 to eat 3 small pieces of lamb, some cold pommes (chips) and some over-cooked vegetables. Shocking! No other option (no bar meals even) except another restaurant 200m down the road which was fully booked.

Check-out - I stepped up to the counter to be told "sorry sir, I'm busy for 5 minutes, you'll need to wait for my colleague". I waited 8 minutes and then had to wait until somebody brought my bikes around.

Good pool, Poor hotel - my experience summarised.

Dear Mr. Booth,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. We take guest satisfaction seriously and are glad to hear from you.

First of all, I would like to apologize for the frustration you've been experiencing recently. I want you to know that we appreciate your feedback. It will allow us to resolve any problems that occur and help us to improve our services.

We kindly inform you that our building dates from the middle of the 19th century and is therefore old, it is difficult for us to set up an air-conditioning system, even if this is part of our future plans. Also, please feel free to ask for a fan during your stay.

We understand that your experience in our restaurant did not go well, but you had different options. For example, you can choose the buffet of starters which costs only CHF 32.00 and you can eat light. At check-in time we asked you if you wanted to book a table in our « restaurant à la carte » but you did not accept because it was too early for you to decide. When you decided, it was already fully booked. Regarding your remark about the pommes (chips) being cold, we kindly inform you that our hot buffets are always put at the right temperature in order to keep the food always warm for our dear guests.

However, we would like to express our disappointment with your opinion about the reception service. According to you, seeing the reception staff running to satisfy your request and not letting you wait too long in order to take care of your bikes and keep them safe inside the hotel means to you "being in panic" this is not the appropriate word at all. I personally accompanied you and returned your bikes when you left and apologised for the disappointment you felt about your stay and invited you to come back another time to offer you an entrance to the thermal baths as well as a meal in our restaurant and a night in the hotel if you wish.

You left with a smile and thanking me for my hospitality. This was not mentionned in your feedback.

Anyway, we are truly sorry if you did not appreciate your stay with us.

Best regards,

Firstly, the good. The reception staff at the hotel were welcoming and hospitable, were attentive to any requests we had about our stay, and also handled our checkout courteously and efficiently.

The hotel was also clean, with housekeeping of a good standard. However, it is starting to look a little shabby in some of the older areas of the hotel.

We understand that many (especially older) European hotels suffer from an absence of air conditioning, but even with a fan (which the reception staff provided) the temperature in the bedroom (together with public areas such as the Salle Historique and bar) was almost unbearable. We spent two sleepless nights in sweltering heat, and it was impossible to have a drink in the bar, or breakfast in the Salle Historique without being in some discomfort. Surely, if not in the bedrooms, these areas could be fitted with air conditioning?

We’re also curious to know what makes a superior room, superior? We booked with the hotel’s “romantic experience” offer and enjoyed the champagne and roses (which doubtless cost less than we paid), but the room seemed fairly average and small to us. And with our second night in the same room costing 330CHF, we were left wondering what differentiates a standard room from a superior room? We might have expected something such as a Nespresso coffee machine, a little more space, and certainly wouldn’t have expected bare wires on the bathroom hair dryer.

But our major complaint revolves around the food offering at the hotel. The greeting process (surely very simple!) at the Table restaurant, took an age, and was perfunctory and functional rather than welcoming. The waitress seemingly didn’t know how to use a corkscrew to open our (pricy but average) bottle of wine, breaking the cork without an apology or offering an exchange.

We can understand how a buffet-style food service works well for a lunchtime service where informality is key (although having one chef on duty led to a long wait), but having to queue for our evening meals felt more like visiting a cafeteria than a pleasant, relaxed dining experience. The bland, overcooked, limp vegetables; sad looking starter selection, and mass produced, unappetising desserts (which looked as if they had been left out for some time) did little to improve matters. Overall, our main course, did little to entice the palate.

Bar service was equally slow, with the single barman rushing to fulfil bar orders as well as restaurant orders. For our second night, we elected to visit the nearby Chalet restaurant which was a far more pleasant experience, (even though we were double charged, although on querying this, we were later refunded). Check your bills carefully!!

The breakfast buffet on both days was adequate. A small selection of hot food, and the usual continental selection of meats, cheeses and pastries. However, on our second morning, the breakfast room was especially busy (despite having to book a slot due to covid restrictions), and there was a large shortage of cooked items as well as pastries. Indeed, even when the single bain-marie was replenished with bacon, eggs and sausages, these were then taken by waiting staff apparently to fulfil room service orders. Likewise, croissants and pastries were in short supply, and were not replenished during the hour we spent over our minimal breakfast.

The spa is, of course, the main reason people visit the hotel, and it was pleasant to spend our days relaxing by the pools. The changing rooms however could do with some modernisation and love. Additionally, (and again) the food offering available at the poolside cafe was of average quality - with the only alcoholic drink available being beer, and far from freshly prepared baguettes.

Overall, our bill for the two night stay (with our “romantic” champagne and flowers) came to 1127 CHF (plus drinks and our meal on the second night of our stay). We know this is Switzerland, but we simply don’t think this represents value for money.

It’s unlikely we’ll return when there are much more pleasant and better value offerings in the country, where our custom feels truly valued.

Room tip: Avoid hot times of the year and eat elsewhere.

Dear Alex,

First of all we would like to thank you for your review on TripAdvisor and we have taken good note of your comments.

We are also surprised about your very detailed review and that is why it has caught all of our attention.

Let us make the situation clearer for both of us point by point, first of all we thank your for your good comments concerning the Front Desk and the Housekeeping department.

Indeed, our establishment is an historical building from the middle of the 19th century and therefore old, it is difficult for us to install an air-conditioning system, even if this is part of our future plans. In consequence, the only option is to leave your curtains closed during the day, open the windows at night and use the fan.

The difference between a Superior Room and a Classic Room is the view, the first one has it on our lovely garden but there is no difference of size. If you would like to have a bigger one we have the Deluxe Rooms, the Junior Suites and Suites which have by the way Nespresso machines. About the hair dryer wire, this is indeed not acceptable and we are really sorry for that.

For the restaurant we are not trying to find a global excuse for your remarks, but you should know that our entire establishment has been disrupted over the last few months by the various health restrictions which have meant that many employees are new and this can sometimes lead to shortcomings.

We also understand that the Buffet restaurant did not meet your expectations but we are happy to read that you enjoyed the Chalet. About the double charge, at first you were supposed to have the half board twice at the buffet and when you modified for the Chalet, we guess that a misunderstanding happened as indeed the Chalet charged you what you ordered however it was already charged on your room.

For breakfast, we would to let you know that the Hotel was fully booked the previous night and with the health restrictions, we do have less tables so that is why our guests have to book a table upon Check In, the problem is that some of them do not go at the time they booked it and in consequence the room can become quite busy and we are deeply sorry if you had to wait for the buffet to be refilled.

Moreover, we have taken good notes of your comments concerning the pool bar.

Finally, we respect your point of view regarding the value for money of our establishment but we hope to welcome you again one day. We thank you again for your very detailed comments that help us improve our quality and would like to let you know that a letter will be sent to the adress you gave us for your last booking.

With our best regards,

From the reception, to the rooms , to the dining room and also the SPA, everything was perfect from beginning to the end.

Reception : Extremely polite , very well organised and very welcoming.
Rooms, Not overly large but very comfortable with a very large bathroom and a small private balcony/terrace where we could sit and have a drink...

Restaurant : This is a buffet style restaurant but it is extremely well done, there was a very large choice of starters, everything fresh and well presented.. Lots of selection too for the main courses, the meat dishes are cooked as per request and one is free to eat as much as one likes.... Deserts and cheeses again had a large and very varied selection... The wine selection was good but a little expensive in relation to the choice... Service was very friendly, efficient and discreet.. Everything was very agreeable... We thoroughly enjoyed our meal ...

The only downside was that there is 2 services, so one cannot remain too long at the table... Considering that this is a buffet style, 2 hours is quite adequate as it is also possible to return to the bar for further drinks..

The spa is also part of the deal, and there is no limitation on time spent there, so it is possible to really take the time to relax and enjoy oneself..

One negative point : There is only a limited amount of parking spaces, we had to park a little way of..

Overall, we loved it and will definitely return.

Room tip: 109 is a corner room, quiet and away from usual traffic
