We chose Alcala de los Gazules as a friend was teaching English in the local school and we wanted to be in easy reach. This rental attracted us as it catered for friends and had several en-suite rooms - sleeping up to eight. We were not disappointed. (Well only with the weather which was unusually windy and chilly for April). We rented a car over the border from Gibraltar and were surprised to be in the stunning white village within 40 minutes.
This is, for me, the perfect holiday accommodation but it is not shiny five star luxury. it is five star tastefulness, sympathetic to the culture of the country and area and welcoming in all aspects.
We adored the enormous rooftop and the lovely planted area directly outside the kitchen and living rooms. I understand that often Andy and Helen run art classes here and the evidence was there in the enormous ground floor studio which had a large second living room and the four en-suite rooms running off it. Their style and love of art and design is reflected throughout the house, along with Andy's desire to recycle where possible. To me - that is what makes Casa Alcornales so special.
You will need a car, and to accept that a peublo blanco is on steep hills - as is the house. So this is not a venue for the infirm.
The village offers plenty of places to eat and drink, and if you want to buy and cook delicious local produce and at in the kitchen is extraordinarily well equipped. We did a mix of both. Using both the tiny Alcala market and produce from further afield.
Seville, Ronda, Cadiz, Jerez, Tarifa, Gibralta and even Malaga are all within easy reach as are the beautiful forests of Grazalema, Alcornales natural park and the most beautiful beaches I have seen in a while.
We found Helen and Andy to be super hosts and full of useful information.

We had a wonderful stay here with lovely home cooked imaginative food and comfortable pretty rooms.
Helen and Andy are great hosts ; welcoming and helpful but totally unintrusive.I totally agree with the previous review it is like being at home but much cleaner and more comfortable and better weather,
There is so much to do in the area walking , swimming, sherry drinking, food , wildlife , painting that there is not enough time for it all. So much more to do so we will return and I miss it already.
It would be impossible not to relax in this house! Wafting about on a summer evening, glass in hand, or rising to brilliant sunshine and the slowly waking sounds of the town on the breeze. It is cavernous enough to lose each other if you want to sneak off to read a book yet comfortable enough to all hang out together as a family. The town is stuffed with character. It is great for wandering through and happening on small shops selling local food or small bars selling Andalucian beer.
